Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe???

So many people that i have talked to on these forums are telling me that i should be getting the Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe book. They say it works and it will give me results.

If it did give me results how will it effect my max cleans, squats, bench presses, verticle jump, even 40 yard dash times. Will this book really help me become a better athlete, help improve every aspect, and give me the results i am looking for???

i can't tell you. but remember how important it is to have a plan. fail to plan, plan to fail. and the good thing is you can abandon it any time you wish...

It is an excellent book telling you how to set the proper form, and then common mistakes people make. I know i thought my form was perfect, but I fell victim to "common" mistakes in squats and deadlifts. The better your form, the more you can lift, also it is written for athletes, not for "looking impressive in the gym". It teachs you how to develop power off the floor.

Nobody here says the book will give you anything; you still have to be patient and work hard. If you want promises like that, head over to OMEGA's site and max out your mom's credit card on Amp02.

Learning how to perform properly the basic movements that should be part of pretty much any program is one of the most (probably the most) important things you can do.

Re: Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe???

Thanks guys, its just i really want to excel in the sport of football so bad. Its what i work really hard for.

Improving at (beginning with learning proper execution of) basic barbell movements will take care of the functional strength aspect of being a better football player. Like Al said, strength training for athletics is one of the topics that's almost always in the background in Rippetoe's books.

All I want is to get as strong as I can, without getting seriously hurt on the way. That way, when I start to get old, I'll have a good solid base to preserve into my twilight years.

Plus, I'm diabetic, so the stronger I am, the longer I can stave off insulin dependence.

Rippetoe's second book, "Practical Programing" will answer your questions as it explains how strength training helps you become a better athelete.

Rippetoe's work references work by Bill Starr, strength coach for the 1970's Dallas Cowboys football team and author of "The Strongest Shall Survive"

If you want to excel in football Rippetoe's books would be a good place to start.

"Starting Strength" provides you with the beginning foundation that you need. "Practical Programming" tells you where to take it from there.

Get both books, but read SS and apply the program first out of the two.
