Starting from scratch all over again

Hello eveyone. I am new and have found some VERY useful info on here. Here is the problem I am faced with.

I am very overweight at this point. I was in great shape about 5 years ago but due to crappy life circumstances, weight piled on and I really couldn't change the situation I was in. I was very muscular at one point in time, and still have muscle, but is covered in fat. Bodybuilding exercises I know, diet I do not. I have been able to add muscle with no problems, but the fat adds as well. I need to strike a balance between building muscle and losing fat. I know this is where diet comes in.

I have read info on dieting and bodyfat but I am way above what the starting point listed was. I will give you a run down of myself:

29
5'6"
185lbs
35% bodyfat (according to a "magic" scale)

I have foolishly considered steroids, but don't think that will do me much good right now with my bodyfat being as high as it is. I eat on the go a lot due to my job (mental health crisis intervention and case management) but am willing to start packing meals. I am ready to start taking this seriously and would greatly appreciate any advice on where to start on dieting and beginning a new workout.

Thanks for the help!

Hiya honey & welcome to EF!! :rose:

 I love it here!

You know the best part is that you started again. You picked yourself up, dusted off, figured out which direction you needed to go and then got to steppin! Big step, little steps, doesn't really matter as long as you keep steppin.

The thread above has lots and lots of links, the one about Physical enhancement covers women and steroids and the fact that steroids don't burn fat.

Dont worry about fallin off the wagon cuz we all do. Just look for loose change while you're down there and then get back up and start steppin again. :garza:

ok trying to figure out this membership thing...think my name changed...msam76 now? LOL, To late to figure it out!!!

With your background, e-book Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle by Tom Venuto is probably the best resource you could purchase. The stickies are great too, but the book offers the info all in one place!

Welcome msam!! :wavey: The woman on here are very knowledegable and supportive!! I would start out by going to the top of the board and reading ALL the stickies as they pertain to diet!! They are very informative! ;)

wlmcrea has a great suggestion with the above e-book. It is a GREAT place to start, or the Body for Life book by Bill Phillips, will also create a pretty strong foundation!!

Hey welcome to the board. I think you are going to find a wealth of information here. Like the others said, start by reading the stickies as they are filled with great information. Second, look at some of the training logs of Ice Princess, superqt, sassy and especially Bunny.

You are going to get all the information you will ever need and the support of some really wonderful people on here. I am male and I don't frequent any other place besides the training forum and here because the people here really want to help.

Congratulations on getting back. Your will be amazed how quickly your body will change when you get your diet on track. If you have any specific questions, do not hesistate or be shy to ask. Thanks for posting and let us know what we can do.

Welcome....join in! You will love it here and you will have no problem getting on track again!

Also just for the record, I'm assumign "magic scale" means a tanita / bioimpedance scale -- these measure differently than a caliper measure - which usually come out around 8-10 % less - its just a number but just wanted to clarify that.

Well Helllllllllllllllllllllllllllllo there :)

Welcome to our home :)

We love it here!

I see the ladies (& wonderful few gents that frequent our forum) have welcomed you with open arms ... AS EXPECTED!!!

You have put it all out there.. lets take it a step further ... WHERE are you coming from diet & training wise ... Give us some details of the BB background & CURRENTLY what you eat .. so we know where to go & what to suggest...

It's important to see where your cals are at now (or have been over the last month) to avoid a quick jump in the wrong direction ya know? esp. if you haven't been eating enough for one ... going from 900 cals to 1500 cals can be quite a jump, plus the added midnight binges, drinknig (if ever) etc...

the more details, better we can help!

Again welcome :) TGIF :)

magic scale=the tantia, that is the one I use. In the past, I was more into weight training than diet. I was in pretty good shape but not cut, no six pack or anything. Good muscle tone. I bulk, which I don't mind that much, but want to get the fat down. I lifted a lot and was a runner (local 5k and 10k mostly). Training shedule was
Monday: chest, tri's, shoulders
Tuesday: cardio, abs
Wednesday:back, bi's, forearms
Thursday: legs
Friday: rest (abs only)
Saturday: cardio, light circuit training
Sunday: rest

The split worked well for me and I spent at least two hours in the gym if not three.
I tired many different splits, usually chaging every 6 weeks, but I would always go back to the one above. My diet was never really watched. I didn't pig out when lifting, who wants to eat a tub of ice cream then go do legs??? Or eat candy bars after puking from running your butt off? So, I ate pretty clean. Cannot give exact info but usually skippped breakfast (bad habit) salad for lunch, protein shake in afternoon, then dinner which was just about anything from another salad to chinese. My current diet is a mess. I usually don't eat anything until around 10, am I am usually at the office where someone offers those nice salty chips...an empty bag and an hour later we are thinking about lunch. Lunch is usually a couple slices of greasy pizza or a sub, occassionaly chinese. And of course while we are out picking up our lunch, we grab diet pepsi, chips, and something sweet. Munching occurs all afternoon. Dinner is usually processed foods like frozen breaded fish, ready made "just put in skillet and add water" meals, and meats with potatos, gravy, and a veggie. And of course...something sweet!

Makes you cringe doesnt it?? I can't believe what I eat in a days time. I must be over 2,500 calories if not 3,000. I don't want to eat this way, I would love to have things prepared to munch on instead of chips but I just don't know what. I can even skip the munching and just add more meals. I think skipping breakfast is a HUGE mistake and if I did have breakfast I wouldn't eat as much during the day. Any help or diet plans would be great. I found a couple on the newbie sticky that I liked. But am willing to try different tips.
