some signs that you are getting there....

It was one of those days in the gym that make it all worth while. First off, I am by far the biggest I have ever been, under 5'9", and pushing 250lbs at around 11% bf. It was chest day and i hit 2 prs, benched 325lbs for an easy 10 reps, previous best was 5 reps. Then went over to incline dumbells, we have the ivanko ones that go up to 125lbs, then some cool chrome ones that were ordered special, 130's and 140's. I've never touched the pretty silvers before as they were too heavy, but after my benching was done, I smoked the 130's up for 9 reps, and might have done more but i was shocked
As I was hauling up the 130s for another set, i heard two pretty young things arguing about me. One was saying that i was too big, that it was gross, the other said she liked her men huge..... My goal was always to be so big that I grossed most people out....
All in all, it was one hell of a day for the bodybuilder in me, but I'm sure my wife will return my head to its correct size when she gets home...

What are some of the things that will tell you guys when you are getting to your goals?

Man...let me be the first to say (in THIS thread) that you are one HELL of an inspiration. You're a monster, and pretty humble about it...and I always see you giving others good advice.

When I hit my target bodyweight of 210lbs-230lbs AFTER a cutting phase. Right now, that is my goal...however, I think goals have a way of changing once you attain them:D

Thanks bro, I vividily remember being 135lbs, so being humble comes naturally.

You're right about the goals changing, i never thought I would be this big, and it isnt nearly enough, I still look in the mirror and think I'm way too small

I like when I'm in a room training by myself, and people start to come in, then they see me and turn around and leave.

For me it mostly comes down to strength and power. Of course while doing my best not to make myself a fat bastard. Current size 5'9'' 240lb 20%bf.
I never had a good workout I could follow until I came across your 5x5. I love it because I know how much I will be doing week after week. When I started I was at 280 5x5 on bench. My goal was to get to 315 5x5. However, as the strength went up, my body fat went down, and even weight went down.
Three weeks ago I blew past the 315 and this monday did 330 5x5. I think I will really feel like I've arrived when I eventually plateau, working to an eventual 1RM of 405+. Then I'd like to really cut down to 220ish and low teens body fat.

I reach that point when I hit a huge PR... or at least one that I am VERY pumped to get.

But that is when I start thinking about what new PR I want..

damn bro, thats some great progress

Incredible as always Needsize! Great shit! I had some fun today. Some guy with his girlfriend yelled "hey" to me as I was walking past them. "How much you lift?", he asked. I said "About 800lbs" haha They just about shit themselves. Then I left. Probabally thought I meant the bench press haha. Was exaggerating my partial beast lift by 75lbs haha. Fuck em!!!

My neighbor needed someone to push her car, so she came to me. She had someone else there too, but I told that person I would do it by myself. It was actually a lot easier than the last time I pushed a car.

good stuff guys

I had another moment the other day, I was squatting and as I am warming up and getting close to my working weight, I drop to singles. SO my last set I did 365lbs for one rep, then loaded it up to 405lbs. These young guys were standing behind me, and were talking about me, saying they had never seen anyone in here single over 400lbs. i got under the bar, and did an easy 8 reps, ass to the floor, with a full pause at the bottom of every rep. I could hear them as I going going "holy shit, I thought he was doing only 1 rep", or "405 for reps, damn is he ever going to stop..."
When I racked it and turned around, they actually looked scared, so I went out of my way to start a conversation, just to show that not all bodybuilders are asswipes
I love this stuff

Awesome!!! You should of launched that fucker through her house!! Now that would be a PR!!!!!!!! hahahahahhahahaha

Need, thats truly is one of your great personality traits. You always are willing to help others, and you are almost always humble about yourself. That's a great pr on the incline today, and having those girls argue was icing on the cake! Fantastic.

Slobber, same deal with you. You are incredibly strong, big as a house, and you are always humble. And for the record, if I walked into a room, saw you training, I wouldn't leave. My jaw would be too stuck to the floor to be able to move!

Some of the things that make me feel like I am getting there? Hmmmm theres all sorts of little things in life that show me this. The other day a guy who I used to think was HUGE at the gym came up to me and was telling me how huge I am! He kept asking if I trained natural or not. I then looked him over good and realized I dwarf him. That felt good. Also when I go out and people ask me for bodybuilding advice, or I overhear someone saying it's too much, that feels nice.

But then it seems I have bad days when my sister, who always has a comment for me (but only when she is with her boyfriend who feels very insecure about me, and doesn't like it if I wear anything tight around him. He actually told her that). Last week I saw her at my fiancee birthday party. She told me I was looking thin. The next day I saw her at her work, and one of her coworkers asked what gym I'm a bodybuilder at and if I do shows. My sister then went on a lil story about how another coworker met this bber, and that the girl said she wouldn't touch a juice monkey in a million years. I know those were directed at digs towards me. :( I know it makes her boyfriend (same height as me 6'3) who is 170lbs feel better, but it's almost like she enjoys it, and is somehow jealous of my personal progress in life (not bb but in general), and uses the bb thing to knock me. Go figure, I get the signs and good feedback from strangers, and the negative from family!

All in all it feels good when people around you let you know you are on the right track. I look in the mirror and still see the 145lb 18 year old who everyone laughed at and picked on, the positive comments give me a glimpse of how I really am. :)

LOL Beast I just read your 800lb thing. I nearly fell off the chair laughing just imagining the look on those peoples faces. I've come to realize that whenever someone says lift, they always mean bench. If you ever see them again, tell them you are up to 900 for a triple!

:FRlol: :FRlol: :FRlol: Its always the bench press! ThanX brother!! I understand that negative shit! Just the other day some bitch called me a fucking loser cuz Im in the gym all the time, someone else told me this shit. Had she told me this to my face I would have torn it off. haha Pissed me the fuck off. But Its better to let that shit slide. Just hate people who find it necessary to look down on others, Like thier shit dont stink. hahaha

Fuck that bitch bro  had the same thing kinda happen to me...this girl I was talking to for a few weeks wanted to get together one particular day (for some special shit, forget what), I said no because I was heading to the gym with my partner...she yelled at me (over the phone) and said I was "fucking weird" cuz I "get off" from sweating, and I spend too much time in the gym (which only between 2 and 3 hours a day)...let's just say she tried apologizing later, but I told her to never call me again...
Don't worry 'bout it bro, you don't need bitches like that.

Mine was actually sort of silly. (At least I thought it was.) A friend was over for dinner, and he, myself and my wife were all in the garage BS'ing for a few.
For some reason, I had 135lbs on my pulley set up, and my lat pull bar was attached to it. (I never do lat pulldowns and I do higher rep/lower weight tri pulldowns, so I don't know why the weight was on it.)
My buddy, grabs it and starts pulling for all he's worth, almost hanging from it trying to pull it down. My wife did the same thing, and got it a little father. I grabbed it and did 3 or 4 easy strict tri pulldowns with it.

My buddy's eyes got real big.

The look on his face made my day.:D

It's weird but I actually like it when I hear the 'steroids' comments people in this country feel they have to make about anyone who's over 210lbs (europeans weigh on average a scrawny 150). Makes me feel like I'm getting somewhere lol.

God knows what they'd say if they saw some of the real slices of juice enhanced beef I've trained with.. probably crap themselves in terror and say nothing.

I was working out on Monday and I was doing explosive/power shrugs. I was using 495 for 5 reps on my last set and some guy approached me and asked if that is the most I've ever done on the movement. I said "yeah", then he said "I used to work out with this guy who did 10 plates on EACH side", and I said "Wow, when you see him again maybe you can get me his autograph", the guy just kind of slinked away knowing what a lube job I thought he was.

I guess you've arrived when people feel the need to say stuff like that.

"How much do you lift?" is the dumbest question ever, it enrages me more than "How much do you bench?", I just say "I don't lift weights", the look on the faces in priceless. I'll even say this in the gym as I am lifting for an even more priceless reaction.

I by no means treat people in a way I wouldn't want to be treated, but comments like that insult my intelligence as well as what I do and what I am passionate about, so if people want to be asses, I will be an even bigger ass.

thats a good one, I get that all time time too, either "I used to do this much" or "My buddy used to do this much", somehow they mistake you for someone who cares

I also love when a girl will say 'my brother/cousin/boyfriend/ex-boyfriend lifts too, he's real big, like you'. Then you see them and it is some 165lb, wife-beater wearing bicep boy whose neck you would ring. Damn, I am feeling fired up today, I love this thread, this board is like a support grop for ''oddball weightlifters".

Great PR Need. You kinda remind me of myself. I'm only 5'9 and I was only 135 lbs throughout ALL of highschool and part of college. I still not that big now, I only weigh 192 lbs.

What type of diet are you own need, how many calories to you try and get a day?

well..... i heard a statistic a long time ago that says on 1% of the worlds population can bench press over 300lbs.....

so imagine how psyched i was when i was trying to do a max push jerk with 300lbs....... i wonder what the worlds population could do that.

i love hearing the ..... hey my buddy, father, dog used to lift this much. or i used to be big like you, then i quit working out and it all turned to fat. the guy at the pizzia buffet told me that and also said that he used to squat 800lbs atf for reps back in college.

i want to get a shirt made also that is black and white with this phrase on the front :"No...I'm not on Steroids....but Thanks for Asking"

and another that lets me know i have made it. is hearing people with no discipline saying i wish i could loose 20 lbs. and i tell them that i could do that in 4-6 weeks, and watching their jaw drop ask they ask whats my "secret"....i tell them its and ancient way long forgotten.... called hard work and dedication....

but here is something else......probably one of the best things i brag on.

My raw bench max is 315....... sure lots of guys bench that..... but my butt stayed on the bench, and there was a full pause..... and i dont know anyone else in my gym that can hope to press that much with a pause..... oh yeah, and no one else touching the bar..... i feel sorry for the guys like me who legitimtly bench (with a pause) 315. becuase the number is so underated because of the countless masses that do the 1 foot drop, bounce off chest , crotch in the air with the partner assisted row.....

sheesh...

:lmao: I can't tell you how many times I've seen this!!

What are some of the things that will tell you guys when you are getting to your goals?

Well, I am really my worst critic so when I feel good about my progress, it must be true! I did get a really nice compliment from a lady who took a kickboxing class of mine (I'm a relatively new instructor). After the class she came up to me and said, "seriously, that was the best class I've ever taken." I've been working really hard to be a good instructor, so that made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I saw an ex-boyfriend from high shool last year at the grocery store. He was very surprised to see me and said that I looked great. He even guessed me to be 125 lbs...which (for a chick) made my day! :D

I feel pumped when I hit some new personal bests and other accomplished lifters in my gym make positive remarks.

Last week on Shoulders I hit the 100 pound dumbells for 8 strict reps on shoulder presses and was just jacked right up, it felt even better when a few of the guys around who were watching were impressed and commented.

I guess I still see myself as small and sometimes don't realize I am right there with some of these guys.

I despise this. Sometimes, I don't know why I let it get to me because I should only be concerned with personal progress and not care about anyone else, but it annoys me that some guys think they are in my league, when their bench would be down 100lbs if they did it my way, their squat would be down 100lbs if they bent their knees, 200 more if they went to parallel, and even more if they went ATF.........More than one person has complimented my form though because I stick out at a commercial gym, most people 1/4 squat on a smith machine, bench press as Exodus described, perform inclines standing up, clean like they're doing a reverse curl, and do 1/1000th of a rep military presses because their "shoulder hurts" or " some guy told them it is bad to go all the way down".

Lifting is one thing where things need to be seen by somebody competent, if someone who doesn't know anything witnesses someone bench 400 with their ass off the bench, doing a neck bridge, bouncing the weight, and having their partner row the bar up, they can say they did it.

no, you don't need time...11% is just fine! For a show, 4% is good...for every day, I think it's toooo lean...but I'm silly like that--I like em big.

thats awesome bro, good job on the progress

as for me,I know I am nearing my goals when Im sitting about 210 and look far more proportioned, thing are coming along, my back is getting a sweet v now and my shoulders actually stick out in long sleeve shirts unlike before. however my pr's have slowed quite a bit to once a month usually. but I still think I have came a long way since last year even

LMFAO!!!

JJ, heres an overview of what I eat on a typical day, it does fluctuate though
meal 1 eggs and toast
meal 2 oatmeal and whey shake
train
meal 3 post workout shake 40 grams whey 70 grams dextrose
meal 4 1/2 box kraft dinner, 1 can tuna and a glass of skim milk
meal 5 same as number 4
meal 6 1/2 container cottage cheese, glass skim milk, 1-2 sandwiches with lean beef
meal 7 same as 6
meal 8 whey shake in milk prior to bed.

There is also 4 tablespoons of EFAs in the morning. Its fairly lean as I am using insulin in the evenings

I hear ya.

Had an Ex years ago say that the hour and a half I spend in the gym each day is an hour and a half extra I should be spending with her.

Any guesses on how long it took before she was my Ex ;)

I cant stand tuna so it helps, I prefer the PC White cheddar stuff, pretty good with tuna and cheap too. The only way I can eat tuna out of the can is if I throw in a few spoonfulls of EFAs

cool i am gonna pick up the PC stuff you mention as I love white cheddar.

Thanks.

for me, i get a kick out of the little things, you know...when you're doing a set and you can feel people looking at you, people attempting to move the same weight as you did but fail miserably, etcetera....unfortunately these moments are pretty rare for me so i actually never have the feeling of being 'there'.

personally I love the envious little whisper when I walk buy, with all the juicehead comments. I've heard guys say that anyone could look llike me or better if they took steroids too.
The other day I say a girl watching me train, when her boyfriend came over looking all pissed off, I heard her bullshitting him, telling him I'm too big and she didnt like that....
I love that kind of stuff

i had one of those moments this past summer. i was at a party in this fairly large house...huge mansion...inside the double front door was a swimming pool with a bridge over it. anyway, i was with some friends and a couple of people i had just met at the party. in one junction of a room was a cheap exercise station, mabye the type you see for sale at sears or something.

well on of the exercises was a lat pull down. there were a few guys, even one that was about 230 or so. none of them could pull over 180 once. i busted out with 220 (2 more short of the stack) for 6 reps or so. they were like, wtf. i lolled, but it's funny to see guys trip out over seeing a girl that is strong.

once guys realize how strong i am as a girl, they act differently around me. it's kind of a shame.

was talking to a few people in one of my classes last week, one of the guys has seen me in the gym a few times. he made the comment that in the gym "he's like a fucking animal!" then later said that i appear to be naturally strong at everything.
truth be told, i'm not big at all. i'm not doing extremely heavy weights, well, they're heavy for me, and that's what counts. but my intensity in the gym is what spurred those comments from him. very short rest periods between sets, usually a minute. and i move around the gym with a specific focus and intent, and that's how it should be. too many people milling around and don't seem like they're really "there," if you know what i mean. kinda funny though, those are the people that you only see for a week or two and never see again.

weighed myself this morning for the first time in months.. up to 192. vertical jump is at least 5 inches better than when I started lifting at 172 lbs and the same bodyfat%. people randomly say 'wow' when i do agility stuff around campus for fun these days. definitely getting there :)

great thread

awesome posts guys, sometimes we spend so much concentrating on our end goals, that we forget how far we have come so far...

socal girl, that is awesome. There arent too many serious women trainers at my gym, but I love that when I see it. A girl comes in, all the cool guys start oogling her, she then proceeds to lift more than all of them, awesome.
I am a social worker, and one of the classes I worked in had a young female in it that was an incredible athlete. The macho guys were alway spouting off, but then she would beat them in everything they did, I loved watching that...

this thread is awesome motivation, i'm going to read it again before going to the gym tonight. whenever i'm feeling down on myself, i look at my training log and see how i'm always progressing, that puts a smile on my face. I also love running into people who went away to school, cause every time i see one of them all they have to say is "you've gotten alot bigger." I love that sort of thing :D

good job on the prgress.. I would have to say that the time i know i'm getting bigger is seeing old relatives My brother moved to detroit with his mom and hes down right now and i was talking about me trying to get my arms to 15 1/2 by xmas and he's like you are already a beast. I said WHAT lol ( he never compliments me on anything) it made my day def. he's like you got huge dude you are really goin to be a bodybuilder lol eh's never lifted me up so much b4

One I completely forgot about is my parent. When I was young they were always on me about bodybuilding, thinking I was going to turn into the stereotypical bodybuilder who is an egotistical prick, and only about himself. I kept telling them that getting big wasnt going to change who I was, but they never really supported it.
Now that i've gotten to where I am, kicked ass in my first show, etc, my mom thinks its the greatest thing. She is always taking my pics to work to brag about me, etc...
Not only is that a good sign for me, it helps me realize just how much I wanted their support and how much it means that I have it now

I'll never be as huge as everyone here.....

But I like it when my shirts get tighter, girls feel my arms and say "wow" and when chicks all turn their heads towards me at the pool!

How do you know she was bullshitting bro?

I'm a loser who likes to talk shit anonymously over the internet. I like to cut other people down because it makes me feel better about myself.

Sorry to hear that "bro."

Grow up.Jesus, how old? It's not a flame..it's a totally legitimate question...i just wondered how he was so sure..was she giving you the eye NS?

I'm not suprised that elite gets quite a low turnover of new members when 'regs' with 7,000+ posts just unsult anyone who says something they don't like.

because I've been around long enough to know when a girl is checking me out, and when she gets all embarrased when her boyfriend catches her doing it

and only the other day two other chicks were checking you out and talking about you too! Bro you are one serious babe magnet.

I like to hear the threads pop on my big dress shirts when I bend my arms.

This is a quality thread.

I work out at the University of Arizona gym - Major Meat market. It really is nice when the cute chicks start checking you out -though they are a distraction from lifting.

I have come a long way from when I first started lifting 6 years ago. Its just nice to impress people when they ask how much weight you do on a certain exercise or are just impressed with your physique.

UA- I'm with you, its been 6 or so years and I get asked questions from alot of strangers all the time these days, Its nice when chicks notice, and the comments you know they think....

Also, when people think you cant lift that shit, but then you bust out how many reps and they look away once you finish the set..

My female partner right now was a stranger a while ago, and I asked why she kept talking to me when she could easily blow me off a while back , and she finally replied that she thought I had a nice physique and I "might" know what I'm talking about

:D

had a great moment this winter- Big powerlifter who i knew when I went to high school taught me how to deadlift and powerclean, basically all the hard compound excercises with proper form. At the time I was wrestling and boxing and weighed 146lbs at 5'5 so five year later this winter I workout at home in the same gym as him and was doing some deadlifts and powercleans. He came over and shook my hand and said "Damn you got real big, I'm glad to see you sticking with the basics" Made my whole winter break..
Great thread

seriously,i wouldn't even know if a chick was checking me out. I got my ACDC on full volume and all that i allow to enter my stream of consciousness is me and my set.

I like to think I am pretty focused while training, but I do have a weakness for beautiful women, and cant help but notice them when they are around

What are some of the things that will tell you guys when you are getting to your goals?

I know I'm not a guy, but...

I was thrilled when I was able to bench & squat over 100...I don't know, but 100 pounds just used to seem like such a huge weight.

Now that that's not a problem, I think I'll really feel strong when I can do chins and dips.

I did have a nice little moment a few weeks ago when one of the staff guys at the gym was telling the nursery attendant, while I picked up my daughter, that he calls me "Wonderwoman." Apparently, he's never seen a woman lift as much as I do.

(Not a lot of strong chicks where I'm at...)

those are some great signs

I'm 250lb but look like I'm about 220-230lb...I'm not super strong but have been lifting since HS (20 years ago) seriously for about 2-3 years...

I play alot of pick-up basketball and people just bounce off of me and can't touch me down low....they ask how I got so strong...(really it's just butt and hips along with exp and technique)...I just smile and tell them 'squats'....

Or howabout the ever-popular..."DUDE...have you been lifting?" from someone you haven't seen in a while....

Personally, I love it when my reps go up...I don't really do PR's but when my 5x5's get easier, I know they'd be going up as well....

Thanks for a great post, all.

This was certainly a "made it" kind of day for me...

My closest friend moved to Tenn about Feb of '99. At the time I was about 185lb. He got married over Labor Day last year, so we drive down there for the wedding. With a little planning, I hit my highest weight of 212 the day we drove there. I was pretty fat, but still almost 30 lbs heavier. When I got out of the car at his house, it wasn't "Hi" or "Hey man, how ya been?"

It was "HOLY SHIT DID YOU GET BIG! WTF HAVE YOU BEEN TAKING? YOU LOOK GREAT! THE GUYS SAID YOU WERE GETTING BIGGER, BUT I HAD NO IDEA!"

He's coming up to the Chicago area for a wedding in August. I'm going to try for 230 with less fat. Hopefully I can turn it into another one of those days...
