Skull Crushers and Elbow Pain

Elementality

New member
I've tried doing Skull crushers many times before and I always feel like they are putting stress on my elbows so I stop.

Anyone else feel this?

i also feel the elbow pain...i tried taking a fish oil supplement and that worked a little bit but I mainly just work through the pain...it only hurts while im doing the exercize

Don't work through the pain or you may regret it big time. A tricep tear could be just around the corner.

There's plenty you can do for triceps without causing injury.

Yes.

I have found that higher reps and using DBs eliminates the pain for me. JM presses are the worse.

Yes same, skull crushers are the worst. Heavy french presses are pretty bad too. Using both hands gripping just one heavy dumbell under the plate doesnt hurt at all with me, neither do tricep dips, CGBP or pressdowns so tricep exercises are ok for me.

What I do now bro is just do skullcrushers like a pull-over (i guess thats what you call it), where you get a preacher curl bar and then just go all the way over your head and down then back up. It uses a few more muscles than jsut the triceps, but your triceps should wear out long before the other body parts.

It never hurts my elbows and my triceps get the best workout that way.

What kind of weights are you guys using?
I don't notice any elbow pain in Skull Crushers or French Press, but I'm also not crazy strong.

about 6 weeks ago had a great tri workout and was doing french curls with the 160 db for sets of 5x5. left elbow has not recovered yet and the pain has not diminished either. dumb move on my part.

Heh, well I dont think it takes a rocket scientist to tell me that I should just not do Skull Crushers. Plenty of ways to hit the triceps, in both isolation exercises as well as compound movements.

Damn that's some sick weight borly. I don't like any extension type exercise for under 12 reps. There seems to be more risk than reward. I usually do "rolling" DB extensions with the 60 or 65's for sets of 15.

thanks. my elbows had been feeling real good so rolling tris and french curls i would hit hard. rolling tris i was getting 120s for 10 for 5 sets. i can still get the 100s for 10 but over 100 my elbow just hurts too much. i agree with the risk and reward comment. as im getting older, some things just arent holding up well.

you ever try the russian rolling tri strategy? 7 sets of 8, 30 seconds rest in between? follow that with 4 sets of 25 of band push downs, again 30 seconds rest in between. feels like arm charlie horses.

Jesus No lol

When i was training DC I would get the 60s for 20-25 rest-paused and that would pump my tris so hard it was a challenge to finish up my back exercises. I couldn't imagine that shit. I bet it would really shock some growth into your tris. Especially if they are lagging.

if you have bands, try it. the workout takes like 20 minutes total and its so painful. the rolling tris stays at a fixed weight. the heaviest you can do but complete all 7 sets. the bands, depends on the weight you have. good stuff. try it for 4 weeks if youre in a hypertrophy phase.

My favorite tri exercise is the seated dip machine. I will do a a forward grip (knuckles forward) and really squeeze at the bottom and stretch hard up top. After about 4 sets of 20 its hard to even bend my arms my tris are so swollen. I feel it is a great mass builder.

It comes with time...I loved skull crushers and the mass they added to my arms, but the pain in my elbow joints caused me to stop.

I was moving alot of weight too though..maybe too much.

I'll never forget I saw a huge guy years ago doing skull crushers with 2 plates (225) with a olympic staight bar. The thing that was crazy is he was doing slow controlled 10 rep sets. My elbows really start to hurt around 125lbs.

Yeah I love that one as well, really hits the triceps hard.
