Skim milk powder while dieting??

I'm a week into my cutting phase.... I've had pizza 3 night already and some bakery stuff once. Off to a great start, eh? Considering I've already lost 4lbs in the first week while eating that kinda garbage (as well quite a bit of pasta and rice) would imply that I probably lost some muscle. I must admit I wasn't really devoted in this first week, but starting today I am really gunna get into it.

I don't feel I'm getting enough protein. Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to buy my own food.... my mother-in-law does the shopping, and while I ask her to get certain things while she's at the grocery store, it's not always enough. As well as that, I feel kinda bad emptying the whole refridgerator in the first day, to fulfill my protein requirements.

I can't afford supplements, by the way. So protein powder is out.

Someone mentioned skim milk powder to me a while ago on this board, and I was wondering if it's the best thing while dieting. Dairy products, being high in lactose.... have a high GI, right? And therefore aren't the best thing while trying to lose fat....

.... will drinking a lot of skim milk REALLY blow me out or REALLY inhibit my fat loss? How much fat can I be expected to gain, or how drastically do you think it will affect my fat loss?

I won't be doing it for the whole time.... I just wanna keep my protein high for the first 7 weeks or so of my 10 week diet, and then in the last two weeks I'll be really strict and cut the milk out.

Do you think it would be okay? Please help.

Any other cheap and easy ways to get more protein would be handy too.... maybe, just maybe there's something I haven't heard of yet.

Don't know if you can get much cheaper than eggs. If you're worried about fat, just eat the whites.

A carton of 18 I think costs about 1.50?? Something like that.

i wish eggs were that cheap in Australia. here for 12 eggs its like $3.50 or $4.50 for free range.

i was probably the one who mentioned skim milk powder. i'm still undecided if its great or not for gaining, but it sure is cheap, and easy to mix :)

i certainly wouldn't recommend it in a cutting cycle. its got a lot of carbs, and most people cut carbs first when dieting. lactose is actually low GI, but i have read that it might still cause an increase in insulin despite being low GI (about 33)

Yeah, I know it has lots of carbs....

.... but the thing is, I don't buy groceries in our house. And so I have to eat what's there.... and it's difficult for me to get enough protein. I'm sure I'm already under the requirement, but if I didn't drink about a litre of skim milk a day, I'd be WAY below it.

I'm cutting most carbs at the moment, but I think I'll have to keep drinking milk for the time being.... maybe in the last 4 weeks of my cutting phase, I'll get rid of the milk.... not sure what I'll replace it with to get protein, but I'll have to wait and see.

I'm still losing fat pretty well, so it's okay for the time being.

1 cup of skim milk has 11 grams of sugar (or something like that) ..THat can kick up the insulin and low down fat burning. I always cut dairy, except eggs, during cutting. It worked for me. Anyone else have any thoughts on this. I too would like to know more.

Not to be a prick, but tell whoever buys the groceries to just buy you a cheap thing of whey protein ( a 5 lbs. can)........

They can be found on line for 25$ and last you 3 weeks if you take two servings (40 g or so) a day.......

If you can afford food, you can afford protein powder......
