How come people always mention their bench and then proceed telling us "without a shirt" Can you really lift more or less if you have a shirt on or off.... please no flames, im confused
When people refer to a shirt they are talking about a supportive piece of equipment called a bench shirt used in competition. It is designed to support the shoulders and pectorals, but a side effect is that it improves your bench press. Some people get some serious numbers out of their shirt and some only get 10-20 pounds. But, pretty much everybody gets something.
Shirts are considered custom garments since there are so many sizes. It is not something your gym can buy and everybody use. You have to take measurements of your chest, shoulders and arm to get a correct size and if your buddy is a couple inches off he would be in a different size.
Most gyms have no idea what a shirt is about. PowerMag had a good article about bench shirts a couple months ago. Interviewed a bunch of people and companies. Kinda cool for new powerlifters to learn about the shirts since 98% of the competitors use them.
