Hastings police investigating discovery of body part
HASTINGS -- Hastings police are investigating the discovery of what Capt. Steven Murphy said appears to be a severed human penis.
Police received a call about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday that the body part had been found in the 2300 block of West Second Street in Hastings.
According to a press release from the Hastings police, there is no evidence to support that the body part was severed at the location where it was found.
"While this incident could be the result of an accidental act, a self-inflicted act or an intentional act, the Hastings Police Department is treating it as evidence of a homicide," the release said.
The body part was examined by local medical personnel, who believed it to be human, the release said.
An examination by the Nebraska State Patrol Crime Lab was expected to be done on Wednesday. The examination should develop a DNA profile, and a pathologist will look at the part later this week.
