Running

Out of curiosity, will running build up your legs. I have notice when I get on a running program my legs get rock hard. Any thoughts?

What is this "R-U-N-N-I-N-G" you speak of? It is new to me.

My name is Freak Show and my anti-cardio is WEIGHTLIFTING!

The only way to increase a muscle's size and strength is with resistance training. Running however, is arguably the best cardio excercise you can do. It's likely that the reason your quads get "rock hard" is because running burns a lot of fat.

Acutally, I would incorporate windsprints into your leg workout. It's been discussed any times in magazines and what not. Way back in high school, I was in gymnastics. We did little leg work because we wanted to keep our legs lighter for obvious reasons. We did, however, want them strong. As part of our conditioning program for preseason, we did wind sprints 3-5 times a week. We alternated intensity. For instance, on the les volume days we sprinted shoter distances and did less sprints. On harder days, we did longer sprints and more of them. Talk about a work out. It hits EVERYTHING in your lower body. We would do a sprint, wait until everyone was done, then go in the same order again. Basically, it came to about a minute rest. After 10 of these, it was all you could do not to puke. It increased the size of our legs, although not alot. It did however, increase our explosive power, which in BB terms means more weight lifted. It also ripped us up.

To incorporate them into a body building routine, I would do them once a week (after legs)! Only do a few for short distances to start. You can add length/reps as needed. Believve me, it's rough. Make sure you also do a couple SLOW ones to start so as to be warmed up. It's e-z to strain a quad or ham. If you were really pshyco, you can train with a chute like football does. Basically, buy a parachute made for this and tie it on. They also have weight sleds you can drag. By the way, you'll most likely put on a little upper body size to boot.
