i dont like to do them because i dont like how they feel on my back.. i feel that they can hurt me...but would it be benefitial if i did them on the smith machine and only went down to the top of my head....?? please dont try and convince me to do them because i think that it puts your neck in a vulnerable position and im not doing them

thanks
peace

I don't recommend this exercise. It puts your shoulder in a very awkward and possibly dangerous position. I think you're better off doing them in front.

These guys are all right, behind the neck presses put your shoulders in an injury prone position that tend to cause micro damge to the rotator cuff over time that will eventually cause a bastard of a shoulder blow out. Some guys can do them and never get that fateful injury, only way to find out for sure is to do it till you get one.
Mititary or dumbell press combined with side laterals will hit anything the behind the neck press would

I have stuck with this exercise- it gives me a burn in towards the top of the shoulders like no other- especially with a spot and going to failure- i focus on not bending my neck- looking straight and keeping a tight stomach....also a little below the bottom of my ears is good.....everyones different!

thats because you are using your rear delts to actually hyperextend your shoulders back...into that unnatural position. isometrics do give a good burn. undue stress is always good to try to avoid though, unless you dont want to do shoulder presses when your older. to each his own.
