Prednisolone? Is it for muscle or reduction?

I read about Predinisolone and as far as I understood it seems to stop swelling etc... But I thought I would post on here to get a more in depth view of its use cause my dog just got put on it for a skin infection. Thanks!

I assume what you're talking about is the same as Prednisone. Prednisone is a corticosteroid, its catabolic..so it breaks muscle down. I have been on it for years to treat my Ulcerative Colitis. Basically it does everything bad that anabolic steroids can do to you (hair loss, acne, etc) and breaks down muscle. It is used as an anti-inflamitory in most cases and takes water out of tissue. Luckily I am off the crap now and can start to gain muscle again. PREDINSONE IS THE WORST!!! Dont take it unless you have to.

Oh I forgot to mention that it can drastically weaken your immune system and gives you moon face (causes facial swelling).

My cat is currently on prednisone for an inflamed bladder. In humans it has a lot of undesired effects - bloating, muscle loss, etc. In cats, it makes them very hungry.

Prednisone metabolises into prednisolone.

They cause the hunger effect in humans. Remember when Jerry Lewis was so heavy/bloated? Prednisone.

Stuff screws with your sugar metabolism, your water retension ... you REALLY don't want to be on it unless it's ABSOLUTELY necessary, corticosteriods have fabulous antiinflammatory effect, but they essentially have NONE of the cool benefits of AAS.

Here's something that explains what they do pretty well, it's from a vet website but more user friendly the human info:

Prednisone and prednisolone are members of the glucocorticoid class of hormones. This means they are steroids but, unlike the anabolic steroids that we hear about regarding sports medicine, these are "catabolic" steroids. Instead of building the body up, they are designed to break down stored resources (fats, sugars and proteins) so that they may be used as fuels in times of stress. Cortisone would be an example of a related hormone with which most people are familiar. Glucocorticoids hormones are produced naturally by the adrenal glands.

We do not use the glucocorticoids for their influences on glucose and protein metabolism; we use them because they are also the most broadly anti-inflammatory medications that we have. Their uses fit into several groups:

- Anti-inflammatory (especially for joint pain and itchy skin)

- Immune-suppression (treatment of conditions where the immune system is destructively hyperactive. Higher doses are required to actually suppress the immune system)

- Cancer Chemotherapy (especially in the treatment of lymphoma)

- Central Nervous System Disorders (usually after trauma or after a disc episode to relieve swelling in the brain or spinal cord)

- Shock (steroids seem to help improve circulation)

- Blood Calcium Reduction (in medical conditions where blood calcium is dangerously high treatment is needed to reduce levels to normal)

Prednisone is activated by the patient's liver into Prednisolone.

I was on prednisone for 6 years b/c of ulcers in my intestines and have always wondered if there are any AAS that would have the same anti-inflammatory effect.

I suspect there are such AAS and Drs just wont prescribe them b/c of their bad rep. If that's true I have my genius Drs to thank for me going from a meaty 200lb 18 yr old to a scrawny 25 year old b/c it is impossible to maintain muscle much less actually build muscle mass while on prednisone.

While I'm on the subject of health benefits of AAS I was wondering if there are any that are good at repairing tendons and joint injuries. My dad has suffered from a number of serious tendon and joint problems for as long as I can remember (he's a carpenter) and want to find something that will help him get back his mobility. Any suggestions?

You should check the longevity board They might be able to suggest all sorts of stuff.

Yeah, Jerry Lewis takes lots of it, ever see his face in the past 10 years or so? He looks like a chipmunk. Ive used it for asthma, and can say like everyone else it sucks.

hiya. pharmacist. some of the fears in here are a tad...overstated imo

ultimately effect on muscle will depend on a lot of factors, including dose, site, duration etc. it isnt the kryptonite everyone seems to think it is

and no, docs will not put you on an anabolic steroid to take advantage of its anti inflammatory processes. there are lots and lots of anti inflammatory remedies available as it is

Do not use this shit unless you have some serious inflamatory probs. I use it mainly for people with lung probs. You will be more apt to break down muscle tissue, and you definitely won't build any muscle from it. Predinisolone is also known as methylprednisone. Basically it is an an injectable form of pred.
