pre-workout shake (Mr. X, bloodrinker help!)

I'm going to the gym in about an hour, I've had my 2 meals so far today with about 70gm of protein (never mind the rest, I'm not looking for massive bulk, I'm on the Zone but trying to keep and add a bit of muscle)

My questions are:

a) is a protein shake with, say 30gm protein and 15-20gm carb plus a little fat
(3-5gm) ok to take or should I go with all protein or with more carb (I'm just
going to lift, no cardio),

and

b) is a meal better and how long before working out?

c) what about after?

Thank you thank you thank you!!

you should aim for alot more protein or you won't be able to add muscle-after a workout is a good time for carbs-a meal is almost always better than a shake

dont listen to diamond..... he just posts to get his status higher. anyways, your shake can include protein as well as carbs. i wouldnt go to high on either, just something so you dont lift on an empty stomach. after your workout is where u pile in the simple sugars as well as about 40g of protein. hope this helps

I do not know your stats, but here are some tips...
1)pre-workout (20min) have 30g protein (whey,casein blend)
2)post-workout have 40g protein w/ 30g carbs w/ NO FAT

thanks Mr X!!!!

I'll do just that.

Don't laugh, stats are 5'10, 177
15% BF, chest 46", bi's 16", waist 33.5"
(I lift for exercise/recreation, primarily- no sig leg development!)
eating about 140 gm protein/day

I never laugh at people my friend...we are all alike :) and all equal, retrospect comes from knowledge of one-self and not your physical looks :), but hey, being 5%bf never hurts right.lol

Preworkout (1 hr before) I like to have a whey shake with some simple carbs. I think you should read a thread I started called "The importance of postworkout nutrition considering we all lift weights."

Search for post workout and you should get the thread. Very good read and some good stuff in there that will benefit you to no end.

I like to consume some oatmeal with a small protein shake(30 grams) about 1 hour before a workout if bulking. If cutting then a protein drink(30-40 grams)does me.
