Potassium intake

If 100 mg = 3% of USFDA recommended potassium intake, then you should somehow be getting ~3 grams of potassium/day to be fully meeting USFDA recommendations.

If you're on a very low carb diet, where is this potassium coming from? Especially if you don't eat a ton of veggies or use MRPs. I'm a little confused on how much potassium I should really be supplementing.

The thought on the low-carb mailing list I was part of before I let life get away from me was that you could use something like Nu Salt, which is potassium rather than sodium based salt. It's sold in the spice section at the grocery store just like plain old Morton's. I used it on everything I would normally use regular salt on and did not have any problems. I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable peole here can give you some better tips.

if you are on a very low carb diet, better find a multi or potassium supp to take to make up for this deficiency.

That's the assumption I was making - especially since none of those foods you listed are in my diet. :-)

This is where a friend and I were logic-wise this weekend (we're both on anabolic diets right now). Since you can only buy 99 mg tablets of potassium, this means you have to take 30 potassium tablets to get your full FDA recommend supply. That's a lot of pills.

That's why ....

That's why we used a lot of the Nu-Salt. 1/6 teaspoon has 530 mg of potassium (and 0 sodium, of course). Much cheaper than the pills. :)

I was keeping it at around 20 to 25 carbs a day for over a year without potassium problems with the nu salt. You must supplement the potassium in your system somehow when you low-carb this low.

JJFigure - so did you buy the Nu Salt or have you found other sources for your potassium intake? Just curious b/c I seriously should be taking one (like 5 weeks ago) other than my multi that is. :worried:

I bought the Nu Salt - it's amazing! Tastes just like salt. I also have potassium tablets I'll keep using til their gone. I was just blown over when I finally did the math to figure out how much was really needed and how many tablets that translated too.
