you have to convince yourself that what you know rationally is correct.

the more LBM you have the easier it will be to burn calories.

you KNOW that LBM will increase your metabolism by increasing your calorie requirements.

you KNOW that this increase will allow you to eat a bit more, feel better and still make progress towards your goal.

you KNOW that this increase in LBM will also change your body composition.

you KNOW that the steps you are taking are based on solid advice, healthy choices and sound principles.

you KNOW that gaining 1lb of LBM will take up alot less space than 1lb of body fat.

you will FEEL tighter, firmer and more energetic.

use more realistic means of measurement if you need to: clothing fit, circumference measurement, or a reliably taken bf % (by the same person each time). use all the tools objectively (not emotionally) to assess the progress you are making.

treat yourself like a training client. listen to your emotions, and deal with them objectively. basically step outside yourself and view from the outside.

every once in a while it helps to take a step back and try to leave emotion and overzealousness (word?) behind.

I know, you're right. I need to just train myself like I would train anyone else. Right now I'm having to absolutely hammer it into one clients head :smash: , a guy no less, that he has to eat. He's trying to lose weight on 1000 calories/day(I know, I know, I have no room to talk!) :rolleyes: . I've told him all he's going to do is screw himself in the long run. I am going to deal with my situation in a very methodical and scientific manner and actually use the Bachelor's degree I spent so much time and money earning on myself.

Thanks again. I need a someone to give it to me straight sometimes.
 
Everything everybody said is right on. You just have to have faith. Also, remind yourself that the old starve binge way didn't work, so why go back?

There will be times you'll feel "bulky". Sometimes you'll even look in the mirror and think you see "bulky", and you'll be tempted to lighten the weights or cut calories, but DON'T! Fat loss and muscle gain don't necessarily happen at the same rate, and if you get too lean first, you won't be able to add any muscle. So take advantage and keep training hard and eating properly. If you grow that muscle, it'll be there to help burn and keep fat off.

I know you're right and that's exactly what I need to hear right now. It's one of those days where I feel less than svelte, to put it mildly. But, I KNOW, know, know, know I can't go back to what I was doing becasue that wasn't working and I felt awful all the time. I'm hanging in their. Oh and I moved my cals up to 1200/day this week? It seems like so much food. Do you think it's too fast an increase?

No, it's not too fast an increase. It looks like you're increasing about 100 kcals/day each week; ideally, you'll want to get up to 15xbodyweight for your maintenance kcals, considering your activity levels.
 
It's going to feel strange at first adding the calories, because it goes against everything you've always thought about diet, which probably was diet = restriction. But now diet = fuel for better training. Gradually you should start to feel improvement in your energy and strength. This will enable you to train at a higher level, with heavier weights and more intensity. As you continue getting fitter, you'll need to continue adding calories to support your training and prevent the loss of hard-earned muscle.

Something else to remember - even when you're feeling "bulky", keep drinking that water. It'll prevent your body from retaining water, which can happen when you change your diet. Also, when your body is properly hydrated, your liver is able to devote its time to burning fat. When your body doesn't get enough water, the liver has to help the kidneys do their job of filtering impurities, which means fewer resources for fat-burning.

Definitely will start drinking more water! Gotta give that liver plenty of time to burn fat!!! You would think I would have known that, but all I've ever heard is drink more water, it helps burn fat but no real explanation for why. Good to know.

2000 cals huh? That seems like a heavenly number considering what I've been living on!
 
You think it's hard to get in 1200 kcals, wait until you try for 2000 kcals! I'm on the low end of my bulking plan, and I have to plan my day out and keep adding stuff to each meal to get to 2400 kcals, and even then I've been falling short. If I weren't keeping a log to help plan out my meals, I'd really be falling short.

The downside (if you can call it that) to eating clean is you have to eat much more than if you were eating junk. Them veggies just don't add up that quickly!
 
I can just imagine! I'm trying to plan out my food for tommorow and I have to keep adding and adding....OOOhhh and the fiber is, um, how shall I put this, taking it's toll. I know my body will get used to it, but right now it can be a little uncomfortable. Anyway, I'm feeling better this afternoon (less bulky) and I swear I am noticing a little more ab definition. SO, so far so good.
