You need strong abs to have a strong core. As the rest of your lifts go up, you need for your core strength to be rising accordingly lest you break yourself. Decline sit-ups are pretty much the best you can do. Add weight as able.
Front squats and Zercher squats along with Oly exercises are other good core strength builders. Try doing some Overhead Squats with just the bar as part of your warm-ups for your squats.
