Over the counter sleep enhancers?

Melatonin

I've taken a bunch of over the counter things....melatonin, 5-htp, Valerian Root...but the only thing that seems to get me to sleep is diphenhydramine (the active ingredient in most over the counter products) - I use three of the Tylenol Simply Sleep tabs and it works decently enough.

Incidentally I've also taken some prescription meds for sleep and found that they do the trick if all you need is to get into a regular sleeping pattern (obviously not a good idea for long-term use). I've had success with Rhovane Zopiclone (also called Immovayne I think) and Apo-Oxazepam.

What about accoutumance, side effects and "quality of sleep" with diphenhydramine ?

You don't respond to Melatonin ?

Quality of sleep is poor.. I take immovane nitely.. and it doesn't make me sleep more than 4 hrs.. adn they are not good.. I don't think ppl realize how poor the quality of sleep is though.

I think i said it in a past post.. I would rather have 4 poor hours of sleep then none at all :)

You've never asked your GP what's wrong if you have so much trouble sleeping ?

My doctor attributes it to depression/stress/anxiety...

The immovane is fast acting, but yah, quality of sleep is poor and I rarely get more than a few hours of sleep from 15mg - it also leaves a nasty bitter taste in my mouth (makes water taste horrible). At higher doses it results in amnesiac episodes if I don't go directly to bed after taking it....

Side effects from the diphenhydramine are minimal for me and it gets to the point that I would rather have a few hours of poor quality sleep vs. none at all.

I took Melatonin @ 3mg for a month or so and didn't really notice any improvement....although I don't think I gave it a fair chance. What dose do you use?

I tried everything from 0.1mg to 6 mg and it looks like 0.3-0.6 mg is what works best for me

Only problem : I wake up early in the morning and can hardly go back to sleep but I always feel well rested

Thanks for the feedback!!

The absolute best sleep I ever endured was on Xanx. I was prescribed the med after a bad car accident. I awoke with a sense of well being with less muscle soreness.

Anyone have any ideas why this works so well? I have read that enhances the utilization of GABA in your brain.

Sometimes I take 3 or 4 Gravol.

Gives me a deep uninterrupted sleep (except to pee).

One of the best sleeps I ever had was in the hospital where they gave me Gravol intravienously for food poisoning. I slept like a baby for hours...

Whatever you take just don't do it on a regular basis. Often it can fuck up your overall sleep pattern worse over time.
