Outrage Over Texas College MLK Day Party
Event featured Aunt Jemima, gang apparel, fried chicken, malt liquor

JANUARY 25--Students at a Texas college threw a Martin Luther King Jr. Day party that featured attendees wearing gang apparel and Afro wigs, carrying malt liquor, handguns, and fried chicken, and even one woman dressed as Aunt Jemima. Photos of the January 15 event were discovered on a Facebook.com page by a Tarleton State University sophomore who heads the school's NAACP chapter. A selection of party photos can be found on the following pages. When he discovered the images, Donald Ray Elder told TSG, he sent an e-mail to Tarleton student Jeremy Pelz, on whose Facebook page the photos were placed in a folder titled "MLK." In a reply e-mail, Pelz (seen in the picture at right) told Elder that he would rename the folder in which the photos were placed "so it does not bring any disrespect to Mr. King." Pelz noted that the party was started a few years earlier "because one of best friends is black or African American, whichever you deem politically correct, to be his day not to dishonor him." He added, "So I do apologize if you felt any disrespect because none was intended." School officials have launched an investigation into the party and the university's president, Dennis P. McCabe, has denounced the photos as despicable. In a subsequent post, Pelz--who has yanked the party photos from his Facebook page--stated that the party was not meant to be "racist or discriminating." (18 pages)

hell, my group of friends consists of all sorts of people and races, and we all break each other's balls...even using racial stereotypes, sometimes.

no one gets bent out of shape or demands some sort of retribution; everyone just does it to each other, and they have a good time doing so.

each and every person gets it just as much as the next, and there are never any hurt feelings...just a bunch of laughs from everyone involved and a tighter knit group.

that is because you know them and are friends enough to realize whether disrespect is meant or not. To do it just in general though is disrespectful and rude.

I've seen and been at parties on MLK day much like that. People dressed as gangstas - 40's and fried chicken everywhere. It's pretty common. I don't mind it.

I did think it was shitty when I heard some guy call it "Dead Nigger Day"

what these kids do at their own homes is their business.....but what they do on campus reflects on the school. If you were an administrator of a college and kids decided it was cool to run around campus at night wearing white hoods and carrying torches.......you'd have a problem on your hands. A school would have every right to discipline OR expel these kids based on the nature of this party. There were NO black people there by the way.....hmmmmm, wonder why? Look RT, I'm not a PC motherfucker......I thought it was retarded that the black guy from ABC had to go to "fag rehab" for a personal dispute with another cast member that should never have even been reported on. But these kids published these photographs under the auspices of attending this texas college........and on MLK day of all days. It's repugnant on ALOT of levels. I'm in agreement here. Having a racist party on MLK day, or any day, frankly, would be grounds for expulsion if I were the dean. fucking little spoiled white kids won't get punished, though. It is obvious from the pictures that they think that they are superior to their black classmates. The dean should expel their asses and show them that they are NOT.

Not true... There is a way to be proud of your ethnicity or whatever group you identify yourself with without putting other people down.

I grew up in a school system where I was odd man out because I was white, so trust me when I tell you I know what it is like to be discriminated agaisnt. When I went to high school is was a catholic school with all the white kids, like me. NOT - I was too poor and too "hispanic looking" not to mention that I was "the wrong religion."

For me it is not about the color of someone's skin or their religion or ethnicity, etc but about the content of their character - period. Sorta like Dr King's philosophy... no?

Those kids were just acting plain dumb. Do I find it offensive? Not sure really. I found it more embarrassing than anything else.

No, this is the United States of America. This exact type of party was documented at multiple schools. These kids are the sacrificial lambs because they posted pictures of it on facebook. It's amazing the power the internet is having on peoples lives. These kids are neither original or intelligent. This type of party has been going on for a long time.

overkill X 100......this country is way to PC these days.....we need to get back to the fundamentals that this country is based on......makeing money and everyone pulling there own weight....this is not the land of Have and Have Nots.....in reality it the Will and Will Nots....everyone has the same opportunitis and acces to the same educational system....If there is a class difference between races in the USA in 2007 it's by individual choice ...not racism or bias......succes is something you must work for.....not something that is owed to you or can be given to you...regardless of your ethnenticity..

I thought JEsse Owens was taught in middle school or high school histroy or something. I learned that a long time ago. Must have been squeezed from the curriculum and replaced with a black history lesson that DIDNT involve a black person achieving something on their own and making something for themselves without gooberment assistance.

I dont doubt it. Yet another one of the reasons why my sister is home-schooling her children. We are all of us discovering just how poor education is anymore because of what she is learning in this process.

But see, I would have thought Jesse Owens would have always been put on a pedestal as a shining example of greatness for blacks in America as well as the added bonus of absolutely pwning everyones favorite genocidal maniac in Hitler. I suppose the conflict of demonstrating how a black person can achieve such huge success against such a backdrop doenst sit well with the administrators of public education who desire to only show how blacks have been nothing but downtrodden through history and the only hope for them is through assistance from others. How naive of me, sorry.
