Other gym stories

I read Jay's post and I can understand where he is coming from. I am the only powerlifer in my gym. I am a small guy approx 185lbs. So obviously the gym rats freak at the weight I do. I keep telling them that there are thosands of powerlifters out there that do so much more and I am nothing.
After a heavy bench I overheard a guy say to his friend that I can only do heavy weights for singles or low reps. When they ask what can you bench?? they than ask how many times. They seem to be more impressed with a high rep set of 315 than a single with 500. It is a weird mindset that I don't understand.
They said I have no endurance. The guy was proud that he could do 225 for 12 reps. He was bragging and figured this was an impressive feat. I got pissed. My down set the other day I did 315 for 16.
He walked away talking to his buddy ... I heard the word steroids.... I will never understand the bodybuilding mentality.
I don't want to start a flame war but is it a general rule that the average bodybuilder is so weak??? I see them in my gym screaming on every rep with 80lbs dumbells and the spotter is holding their elbows saying , "it's all you!!!"

The worst was I had to get a bb to spot me. I told him to just stand there, and if I Need help I will tell him to take it. The first rep , as soon as I grunted he touched the bar.. I freaked out.. I gave him shit but he didn't understand Why I have to do the weights on my own.. or they don't count. He probably thinks I was nuts.

It's times like that that I wish I can train in a westside like gym or even a home gym.
Commercial gyms seems to sap my motivation. Thank god for the few training partners I do have.

Sorry for the rant, but i am sure some of you guys have gone through this before.

Sorry for the long post....

Heres the thing i do repect Bodybuilders. Thats why i take offense when they say anyting. What they do is different from what we do. They know it , we know it. But the comparisons are weak when they try to say somthing for feeling weak as a baby. Your right though most bodybuilders are weak. But some , and i say some have attained incredable size that i cant see how they did it. So there is an art to that sport as is ours. Of course most bodybuilders you see do not know that art. SO in short if your in your gym and some wife beater wearing ripped guy (or should i say skinny) comes up and draws a comparison, realize he aint a bodybuilder. He is a weight traiiner, or body shaper! Untill you compete you are not a bodybuilder.

Triple H, I know this is a bit off topic, but a drop set of 315 for 16 is STRONG at any weight. At 185 it is insane!!! You have to be one of the strongest 181ers on the planet. Great work.

Well...it's just that EVERYONE wants to look good and feel like a good looking bodybuilder because they think that it is cool. Not a lot of people want to be involved in a strength sport because it is not considered the "cool" thing to do.

Big difference is...bodybuilding for the average joe schmo is just to impress onlookers. Powerlifting for most is something for their inner desire...big difference. We do this for us...

I think the big MF bodybuilders have a respect for power lifters and what we do. To borrow Jays term now, the "bodyshapers" ain't jack. I heard one telling two teen trainers the other day that training for power is worthless and they needed to shape their muscles to get the chicks. I am married so I guess I want to be strong to impress my wife by carrying the sofa by myself. By the way I work in the medical field (x-ray tech) and you guys would not believe the amount of shapers that suffer stupid injuries. I can tell stories if anyone is interested. Bottom line I hate shapers I love powerlifting I respect huge bodybuilders.

Don't get me wrong. I know some of the the pro bodybuilders are damn strong. I was talking about the average bodybuilder who competes. these guys that have massive arms and only use 30lbs db curls.. The muscles seem to inflate up but after these guys take a week or 2 off they deflate tremendously it seems..

It is usually only the bodybuilders who are not worthy of the name who spend time running their mouths. Rather like the guy who can bench 500 in the gym (sure do here about a lot of them) but then cannot get 315 at a meet.

As far as competitive bodybuilders go, I am amazed at the discipline it takes to train at all while dieting as hard as they do. I know myself well enough to admit that I would cry like a bitch if I had to diet for sixteen weeks twice a year.

lmao thats great.

i have respect for body builders, body shapers or what ever you want to call them, as long as i see that they're improving, and not just bullshitting they're way around the gym taking up space. If they're trying, and making some progress, i respect them.

It is just that all of those guys in the gym THINK that they are bodybuilders. The big guys...OR those that compete...have all of my respect. Those that hit the treadmill and do some cable curls in their baggy spandex with a tan and gel in their hair...don't.
