Oatmeal Is It The Carb Of Choice While Dieting???

Guys, do any of you use Oatmeal as your main source of Carbs while dieting? I was thinking of giving it a try because it's cheap, an excellent source of slow burning Carbs, and keeps me full, too. :D What do you think???
 
I always start off my day with oatmeal and applesauce. I try and keep carbs minimal after that, not much of any carbs except cottage cheese and a low carb wrap with my tuna.
 
not really. good sources are oatmeal, cream of wheat, yams, brown rice, pumpkin, white rice, white potatoes.

but of all the breads out there, whole wheat is the best. however, avoid it as much as possible.

You tell him that whole wheat bread is junk, yet you reccommend white rice and white potatoes....LOL.....they are just as bad, if not worse.....whole wheat bread is a fine cars......no hydro. oils.....organic........
 
The only time white potatoes or rice would "possibly" be acceptable is post-workout ONLY. All other times oatmeal, sweet potatoes, and brown rice.

i added them at the end of the list, for variety's sake. there have been quite a few discussions on the boards about rice, and the findings have been that white rice is not all that worse than brown rice.

for a diet to be successful, it has to be a lifestyle, that's why the more variety one has with food, the bigger the chances of actually following through.

and whole wheat bread is still worse than both white rice and potatoes, because it is processed.

anyway, that's my opinion. no one has to agree with it.
 
Check out barley which is a taste of both brown rice and oatmeal. Plus it has the lowest GI of any carb source. This really isnt a factor if your mixing fat protein and carbs though.
steel cut oatmel and regular oatmeal are the same (taste preference) BUT instant oatmeal sucks balls so stay away from it.

WHO COUNTS THE PROTEIN IN OATMEAL?

no one should agree, cause it's not true.......it is true that brown and white rice and somewhat comparable, white is truly the processed carb Id stay away from besides white bread...as for whole wheat bread, MANY are not processed and MANY are a solid carb source..........get the organic and get the stone ground whole wheat............very simple..........

well then, i guess we can agree to disagree on this issue as well as other diet related issues. :rolleyes:
 
Remind me what we are disagreeing about...........that Whole Wheat bread does NOT have to processed and can be a very healthy carb source? Get a grip bro.....flax, wholemeal, stone ground breads are IDEAL!
 
i buy some great, unprocessed breads from trader joe's - lots of whole grains, no corn syrups or partially hydrogenated oils. great carb source if you ask me.
 
stupid question.. just a regular old potato at the store you buy in the bags to make baked potatos and such.. is that considered a white potato? what other kinds of potatos are there? I've heard of the sweet potatos but I'd assume those are no good..
 
Do any of you guys eat the skin on Yams.... someone told me the skin has just protein in it... I don't believe it but maybe you diet gurus can help me..
 
well, it makes sense as your skin is made up of protein, HOWEver, it's very minimal at best......dont count it as part of your totals, as it is an incomplete protein source......I eat it cause I'm too lazy to shave it off.....fiber.....

dude, all i'm saying is that regular potatoes are not worse than whole wheat bread. these 2 have pretty much the same GI value. and this is where we disagree.
and IMHO, your "ideal" version of whole wheat bread is great, but not very popular, since this is organic, stone-ground etc. etc. it's just not something your average person would buy.

anyway, i'm done here. everyone is entitled to their opinions. :)

The GI of a baked potatoe is about 93! NINETY- THREE!!! That's extremely high.........

Whole wheat, stone ground bread is roughly 50.........HUGE difference chieif, now I'm done here.........
 
The way I thought it works (and I could be wrong, so someone correct me if I am) is that if your white potato, or whole wheat bread, whatever, is consumed at the same time with animal proteins (which are low GI anyways) that it will slow the absorbtion and that lowers the whole GI value of the meal.. and that is what is important, not just the seperate GI values of each part of the meal.

What are we doing? Seriously.....arguing over a f-ing baked pototoe? WHo gives a flying f..................listen, we ALL tend to analyze our diets wayyyy too much..there is so much more.....just eat, eat, eat and be strong.......and YES, mixing it with a protein source and/or fats will nulify the spike in insulin, esp. if using r-ala..........kill this thread.............
