It's Monday morning, your boss walks into your office and says "this is going to blindside you"...the proceeds to tell you that after his meetings at corporate last week they are moving forward aggressively with consolodating operations and eliminating staff, and guess what? You're out effective today...here is your shitty five weeks of severance, have a good day.

That was my story anyway.....And the bitch of it is I had had a conversation with him not two months prior in which he said that if consolodation were to occur they would find a place for me. Don't trust anyone, that's for damn sure, especially if they work for a large corporation.

Face it there is no loyalty to individuals from companies in today's job market. The sooner you realize the you are a free agent in the marketplace the better. All you owe a company is two weeks notice and a hard day's work. If you take a job as a stop-gap or knowing it will be short term even if you tell them otherwise don't have any pangs of conscience. They'll let you go at a drop of a hat and you might as well treat them the same fucking way.

Me, bitter? What made you think so?

Yes I agree, fuck them! Actually I had it pretty good at one place but I just couldn't get along with a certain asshole and when my superior retired the asshole took his place and I quit. Since then it's just been bouncing around. It is very hard to get established somewhere in my line of work. Basically you have to be a yes sir type of person and stab people in the back all day long. I just cant do it.

If you dont mind, would do go into detail describing what it is that you do?

Im a sheetmetal worker. Theres many different types of sheetmetal work, I personally do commercial hvac. Every walk into a large building and see big round pipes up in the air for the air conditioning? That's what I do. Of course theres a lot more to it than that, but you get the general idea. A lot of high dangerous work is involved, and while there is a share of basically ho hum no brainer shit, theres also some pretty challenging stuff. A little math here and there, some trig and shit, circumferences, chords, shit like that. Like right now I just put down 40 3foot square under the floor units and have been wiring them up in series and was hoping to finish the rest of the building but the time has come for another vacation it looks like.

As for bwoods idea of getting a govt. loan for some stuff ive been making: as any business idea looks like it would make money id sure hate to fail and be in worse shape than I already am. We'll see, ill figure something out. I hope.

rsnoble,

how closely do you work with mechanical / structural engineers?

I gave up on the corporate world 10 months ago. I got fired twice in 2002 and that was enough for me. I'm doing my own thing now. I'll never work for someone again.

Not real close, but on occasion. Basically: Mechanical engineer of another company(which in this area has layed off most of the engineers)designs, our detailer incorporates them into the schematic of things, and then I do the shit work. That is I have to figure out how to get what they want in there envisioned 10foot square space into a 5foot square space. There is virtually zero coordination these days. At one time I wanted to be an engineer, like right after I wasted myself away in 4 years of high school and thus was not elgible for any help and had to pay my way. I ran out of steam by my 2nd year. Which was really my first year because of all the prereq crap that I should have learned in hs but didnt. It's my own fault. But then again, like I mentioned above a lot of the engineers are layed off anyways and I make a similar salary so wtf. The only difference is prestige, they wear nice clothes I come home looking like I was a 9/11 victim. It all sucks. I hate working for other people. I need my own thing that is for sure. I've known that for a long time, I guess im just not smart enough to find the path.

heat and air work is not no brain work...

the stuff you are involved in is very demanding
physically and mentally...

i think, from your postings when you are not drunk or
just raggin on bush, that you are certainly intelligent
enough to start your own business and make it a
success...

the lay off may be what you need to make it happen...

then you can come on here and bitch about having
to hire union labor and pay taxes for all those liberal programs...:D

That's fucking funny dude, the part about union labor. Here it is: http://www.noblelapidary.50megs.com I built and designed the machinery in the photos. I just want you all to see it so you know I am not a complete idiot, and I am an inventor of sort. While this machinery is not a new thing, this particular model is mine, and have applied for patents on it. Please dont ban this thread for promotion, no one heres going to do business with me this stuff is far to specific. Im just drunk right now, and see no harm in showing you my skills as a metal worker and designer. As mentioned in my "I collect rocks thread" this machinery is going really slow right now, lots of people dont have close to 2k sitting around for their hobby. This is only an example, i Have a few more ideas, one of which has really been tumbling in my head. Pluse it just isnt for the rock collectors, but general population. Im thinking believe me. Theres a lot more to it than just thinking about it though.

Good for you, I wish you well!

I believe the economy is picking up right now but still sucks if you sell something that people do not need. Being a photographer and reef aquarium consultant, I have loads of time to post at EF and do labor to pay off accumulated debt.

Due to recent short term debt, I am learning and doing siding, gutters, painting, roofing, and flooring.

You do what you have to do. I still have it pretty good.

I remember doing 12,000/mt with a better economy.

I have been through the same thing. Right now my company has a tuition assistance program, to get my masters and ph.d, but only if it is what they want it in and I cannot work a 32 hour week so that I can finish before I am 50. If I do, they told me to my face that my raises will dissappear, my reviews will be crap and I will not have a future.

The military on the other hand pays for everything and doesnt' care what it is in. They look at this way, the more education the smarter I am and smart military equals better force in readiness.

My company is just a group of Nazi's

Good luck, BK is embarrassing and can put a lot of things on hold for a long time.
