Acidophilus may be used to reduce susceptibility to vaginal yeast infections. Symptoms including itching, burning, inflammation, and discharge occur due to an overgrowth of the yeast Candida albicans, which is part of the normal vaginal flora. Some women are more prone to yeast infections than others. Antibiotics destroy the normal probiotic flora, and may lead to yeast infections. High sugar levels are another predisposing factor. Acidophilus is one of the organisms that competes with Candida and decreases its population. Many studies have shown that oral and topical use (by douching) of acidophilus are effective to prevent and treat this condition.
It is believed that yeast infections, including thrush, vaginitis, and vaginal infections with abnormal amounts of discharge, are associated with decreased micro-flora levels. Anyone with chronic infections should consider supplementing with lactobacillus (acidophilus) as they support the immune system and help restore healthy ecology.
The presence of "friendly" bacteria... Bifidobacteria bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus in the intestinal tract, provides a natural control mechanism to prevent the overgrowth of Candida Albicans. If however, this "friendly" bacterial environment is compromised so that an imbalance occurs, then the Candida Albicans may over-populate and become infecting to the body tissues.
Candidiasis - Yeast Overgrowth . . .
Yeast infections have an opportunity to take hold when our body systems become imbalanced. Imbalances in our system can be initiated by exposure to and the use of:
• antibiotics and sulfa drugs
• steroid hormones
• immunosuppressant drugs
• improper diets and dieting
i have also heard it may help acne by balancing the body.. but it will help fight yeast infections!!!
