Need Help With Yams

I can't believe I'm gonna ask this but...

I have a question about yams. I bought them but I really don't know how to prepare them. I know boiling is good but I've never boiled a potato and I am hoping someone can give me directions so I know when to put the potatos in, and when they are done?

Any other forms of preparing yams that people could suggest would be amazing as well.

Can anyone please suggest how I can best track yams nutrion value wise? They vary in size and shape etc.

I can tell you how i prep mine:

Wash, scrub dirt off, cut nasty crap off ect... place in microwave on "Potato" setting, lol... simple as that.

Tracking nutrition... weight. Get a scale and measure gram weight.

Not sure if you mean sweet potato or yams (they are different), but if you mean sweet potato, I just wash them, stick them with a fork and bake them in the oven for 45 mins (at 350).
Sometimes I also will peel them, cut them up and bake them with some olive oil and spice as well.

Sarge: You da man. God bless microwaves. I'll check to see if mine has the button for that.

Blue: Thanks! My oven isn't working... I think it's the pilot light or something. I could probably do the same in a toaster oven though, no?

Yams and Sweet potatos are different, I think I bought yams though. They are both low glycemic, good diet options though, right?

Thanks guys.

Yams = Sweet potatoes in the United States......the names are used interchangeably in the US......technically YAMS come from Africa and can grow up to 7 feet long and don't taste very good......

There are diff colors of sweet potatoes with the most common being orange....

The simplest method is to poke holes in it & microwave it 4-6 mins till it's tender......

i wrap mine in foil...put them in the oven at 400 for about an hour (feel them and when they are real soft they are done). after that i use spenda..cinnamon and i can't believe it's not butter.

wash it, wrap it in saran wrap, place in mike on potatoe setting. 4-6 mins. later, perfect potatoe. then, slice it in half, let cool few minutes. place about 1/2 tablespoon of smart balance butter on each half. enjoy:) that's good shiite right there.

The supermarket sells individually wrapped "special" microwavable sweet potatos at a mark up. I guess the only thing special is the fact that they are individually wrapped in plastic wrap already.

There's a sucker born every minute.

I'm psyched to do this hole microwave thing LOL. Splenda, cinnamon, fake butter... all good things :) I just need to get a good food scale. I'm expecting one on the 25th. haha

Thanks for all the tips people.
