My GF has been on Prozac for the past year and it's destroying her sex drive. Is there anything else she can take that will not effect her sex drive? What is the solution to this problem because our sex life is virtually non-existant.

why doesnt she stop using the medication and try to find out the root and cause of her depression, instead of just trying to mask it?

She went to the doctor and that is what they recommended. She said the Prozac helped her out greatly with not being depressed.

The doctor said it was a chemical imbalance. How do you fix a chemical imbalance?

Wellbutrin is an atypical anti-d that affects dopamine instead of serotonin. It is known for its effectiveness without killing sex drive. Some people actually report an increase in libido. I've been on it for 16 months, and it's worked just dandy.

LOL. This has been coming up a lot lately.

I had some friends that had very good success with St.Johns' Wort, it is used alot in Europe, and I know it never bothered her sex drive from what I could tell.

doctors always say that shit, because they arent therapists.

do you honestly believe every person on SSRI's has a chemical imbalance? honestly?

plus, allow me to let you in on a dirty little secret. one of my family's friends is a doctor, and he told us that the pharmacuetical industries give them kickbacks all of the time for giving out samples and writing out prescription drugs. they cant give out cash, so they go with gift certificates to amazon.com and other stores, steak dinners at nice restaurants, and sometimes even vacations.

no kidding the drugs will make her feel better, because that's what they are designed to do. does she want to stay on them for the rest of her life? does she know that an article came out recently linking the use of prozac to cancer?

i know this won't fly with a lot of people here, but i think the majority of people on SSRI's do not need them, they just prefer to use them as a crutch, instead of finding out what is causing their depression.

There's a lot of truth in this. Pharmaceutical companies like to portray there drugs as "correcting" something, thus restoring you to the way you are "supposed" to be. For one thing, there's not set template for how a person is supposed to be and for another, most psych meds will make anyone feel better. But they don't want that image, because then it makes it look more like a drug than a "medicine".

And hell yeah, the pharmaceutical companies kiss doctors' asses like crazy. There's tons of money in the drug business. I checked out the 2002 PDR and was flipping through the full-color layout of all the pills, parenteral drugs, etc. that are made by all the different pharmaceutical companies. It's fucking mind boggling. I'm obviously not opposed to ingesting chemicals to make yourself feel better, but it's always good to be aware of what's going on.

Well she honestly does not know what caused her depression. She said she's been a happy person all her life and then suddenly just one day she started getting depressed all the time for no reason. Now that obviously has to do with some kind of chemical or hormonal imbalance. I don't believe that every person has a chemical imbalance but you just don't get depressed for no fucking reason without it being something that is internal.
