need some advice on dropping some more weight. I had some health problems a few years back (heart attack in 01, colon and kidney cancer in 04,05, and just diagnosed with hep c) also on hrt 200mg test e per month, Was always healthy, 6'1 190lbs am now 54 yrs old and went up to 229lbs, Just got back in the gym about 2 mo's ago, 5 days a wk and eating about 1200 to 1500 cals a day. Weight is down to 213lbs but won't go any lower, i do 20 min cardio on treadmill and about 1 hr of lifting 5 days a week but i am stuck at 213lbs , most of my access weight is in the mid section. What would you guys suggest to get rid of about 15lbs, i can't really take any stimulants due to heart, and i've cut my diet down to nothing. I know you guys are way more knowledgeable than myself so any help will be greatly appreciated.

That's way too little calories for a person your size... your body is more than likely in starvation mode... you are more than likely losing muscle than fat. You need to up your calories and eat clean. There ain't no miracle solution. Need to work hard and lift hard. Seeing what your workout routine is like would help. Give us a sample of a workout + food on any given day. It would be easier to give you some pointers and advice from there.

Agree with Ryan, you need to eat more calories. More calories is not a bad thing when trying to lose weight. More calories will rev up your metabolism and prevent starvation mode. You still need to keep them in check, though. Try to calculate your maintenance calories and eat approx 800 calories less. This is a decent website to get a ballpark estimate. HOW TO: Calculate Your Daily Calorie Needs

Here's my advice:

1. Eat 5-7 times a day, smaller portioned food with slow digesting carbs and low fat

2. Slow digesting carbs are natural and are not processed. Vegetables like spinach and broccoli are a great carb source for losing weight. Red potatoes are also a good source too. My personal favorite carb is Ezekiel bread. It's a super low GI, has a ton of fiber and digests very slowly. Ask for it at the local supermarket, the Stop and Shop by me sells it. I think most Shoprites have it, too. The taste of it may take time to get used to but I like it.

3. Do cardio 3-5 times a week. I like doing the bike because it is easy on the body (joints, muscles, tendons ect). Once your diet is in place, cardio is the way you are going to burn up the vast majority of that fat.

Good luck and if you have any other questions please ask!

yea guys your absolutly right my diet is shit, i calculated my calories and to maintain weight i need 2700 cals, for fat loss 1700 to 2160 cals. I guess i should add a few cals but its the type i need to add that will make a difference. I'm embarrassed to say but a sample of my meals would be a bowl of ceral w/ sliced banana's or oatmeal and raisins for breakfast, lunch might be a needto's protein bar or some sliced chicken or steak and vegetable small portion. Dinner might be one of those low cal steamer dinners in the frozen food dept or more chicken,s mall baked potato and veg. I don't have the misconception i'm going to have the body i did in my 20's. My work outs are about 20 min on treadmill on fat burn, speed is 3.6 then move to the assorted leg machines and do 3 sets of 15 reps each. From there to upper body , curls, free weights and other machines same sets and reps. I haven't lost muscle if anything upper body and arms are bigger and more defined but that little roll in the front and sides is slow to go away. After the several surgeries i've had i just want to get myself back in healthy shape. If you guys can point me in the right direction i'll follow instructions and kepp you posted on progress. Thanks

dont follow any calculator or diet advice that in meant for a normally healthy guy. talk to your doctor about how you should be eating and training to reach your goals. he will be better able to help you. you should NOT be training hard if you have a bad heart for starters.

joe d my heart is not that bad, heart attack was in 01 and since i've had many stress test and cat scans. I haven't had any problem since then with the heart, my son plays college baseball and i'm either throwing BP or working with him 3-4 days a wk. Dr said attack came from a blood clot that they don't know where it came from as i had no blockage in arteries. I'm really more active than i've probably made this sound.

having had a heart attack, cancer, and have hep c i think you fall into a different bracket than the average guy. you may be much better off with a style of dieting and training that we normally see on ef. such as super low fat and a 2k cals average day. training for you may be better kept in the low intensity cardio vascular type training. some sort or cercuit may work well. any way its just my opinion, i would serously advise you go to your doctor and talk to him about what type of training and diet you should be following.

a lot of the diets and training floating around here are not by any means healthy. they are brutal on the organs.

Joe D that sounds like safest thing to do, i do believe that the cardio is the way to go with this last 10 or 15 lbs. and 2000 smart cals will probably get me there. I just went to Dr. today for blood work, checking free test, but my Dr is a woman and i don,t think she really knows much about hrt or what kind of actual shape i'm in. She's my new Dr. and she's only seen me a couple of times. I will talk with her but i think i'll work around thebasic plan of low fat, low cal diet and stick with the cardio and see what happens. I really appreciate the input you guys have given and i knows its hard to advise someone with my history. Will let you know how it ends up. Thanks
