How many times do you gotta pull a guys hair and tase him before you can get handcuffs on? Jesus the one dude tased him right above his heart for like 30 seconds then grabbed his hair and tased him on the back of the neck for another 10 seconds, the guy wasn't even fighting back.

Tased him above his heart? If it worries you, check out this link. I understand if you disagree with the use of force but what does that have to do with the placement of the device "above his heart"? Guy should have gone to jail last week, unfortunately, I think the cops were trying to be as patient as possible and probably didn't want to wrestle around with him too much since it didn't exactly look like a cop friendly enviroment. Grabbing the guy by the hair may not have been the most appropriate thing to do but I think I understand why the officer may have thought it was necessary at the time.

It's not as clear as the Taser website says. There's actually a moratorium here on the Taser. Most PDs cant use them for the moment cause of safey issues. Anyway our troopers have never been isued this thing and they seem to do just fine lol

For the people saying tasers KILL .... well, young, healthy boys can DIE playing football if they are tackled at the right time. It's just as likely as a taser killing someone. I really don't need a scientific background to discern that there's empirical evidence to support my statement. Tasers "CAN" kill people.......because they do. Obviously most of the time they don't, but everyone physiologies are different so some people do have their hearts stopped or thrown fatally out of rythm by them.

well I did look things up......sorry that I didn't know off hand they were called "defibrillators", but really...so what. Anyway........you're right that manual defibs discharge more joules, but over a very short period of time. I have to think that a taser which is rated at 50000 volts being held to your chest for 10+ seconds, HAS to have some effect on your heart. Yes I am not an expert on tasers and could be wrong, but folks are getting put in the ground by em so whatever.....

He is basically an expert on the how and why a person dies. You can post questions for him on his website. Let him give you an opinion as to whether or not tasers kill people, stop hearts, fry brains, cause disrythmias, etc. I promise, he will give you an honest no bullshit assessment. He currently is teaching pathology at a medical school (former medical examiner, actually got to watch him perform an autopsy once while in school). Once you look at his site, I think you will find he is not the kind of guy to drop his opinion for money. Actually, he is pretty damn weird but not a bullshitter.

and yet there's a video somewhere on the net of a dude in vancouver who got tased and never got up again. He had some cardiomyopathy, can't remember. I dunno, I'm not making a case either way.........you can certainly fudge the research both ways on this. But the cases of people not getting up after being tased are pretty self explanatory. Something was different with them that caused them to be hyper susceptible....what that is who knows. Could be drugs they were on...I don't know. I just think it's retarded to hold a 50000 volt taser to some dude's chest for 10 minutes.

Good question. Most people think we start the heart. Actually, we don't defib a heart if it has stopped. Sometimes, the heart is still working ...... but in a very unorganized way. Sometimes, if the electical activity gets "messed up" it needs to be reset. If the electrical signals get "confused" or not going in the proper pattern, it won't pump blood the way it should. Sometimes, you can't feel a pulse because it is 2confused to get enough volume(of blood) or force of contraction to push enough blood to create a pulse that you can feel .... but the heart has not completely stopped.
We shock the heart to STOP it with the hopes of it restarting and it working correctly after being reset.
Think of any electrical appliance. Sometimes, if it messes up and you turn it off, it will work correctly when you restart it.
I tried to think of a way to explain it. Does that make sense?

If that happens, most of the time we give them some medicine(Epi, Atropine) with an IV and fluid. At the same time, we are trying to figure out WHY the heart stopped to see if we have anything to reverse it(like if the person overdosed on opiates, we give narcan in the IV..... and so on). If we try all of that and get a pulse or an indication on the cardiac monitor that the heart is trying to start beating,again----> some of those rhythms we can shock.... but that only happens if we can be there within the first couple of minutes of it happening. The longer a person waits after the heart has stopped, the less likely it is that it will be able to start,again.
That's why time is soooo important. If they don't get fluid, meds, oxygen for SEVERAL minutes---> the heart can't be saved.
