My girlfriend needs advice

She is 5'7" 135-140 lbs... she was 120 when we met and she would like to go back to that. she is worried about building large bulky muscles, she wants to be toned... her problem areas are her stomach, thighs and butt... can anyone suggest a beginner and intermediate workout plan for her... she really wants to lose her butt and thighs... tummy will follow... I've somewhat got her following a meal plan with breaking them up in the day and got her starting to eat breakfast... it's just when she is not with me she doesn't follow it. but other than that Thanks for all your advice...

Weights won't make her bulky - too much body fat will.

Her goal should be to gain muscle and lose body fat which in theory means she could be 5'7" and 140+ lbs and be a few dress sizes smaller. More muscle will make her body harder, tighter and smaller.

I find that a 3 day split to be the easiest with 3 sets/ 12 reps. During the course of the first few weeks of adjustments you can start to up some weight on the 2nd and 3rd sets.

Just as an example:

Day One
Back, Shoulders & Tris
or Chest & back

Day Two
Chest, Bis
or shoulders & arms

DayThree
Legs & Lower Back

Fit in abs twice a week

Cardio 3 days tops after weights.

Clean consistant diet will be the only thing to show off all that hard work.

Tell her to come visit the board for view of other women and their experiences.

:garza: That quote should be emblazoned onto every weight room wall.

Muscle is denser than fat. A pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat. Muscle is metabolically active - it burns calories all the time, unlike fat which just takes a free ride on the body. This is why weight-training women can weigh more but still be leaner and smaller than their non-training lighter and fatter counterparts.

Women's bodies naturally make just 1/10 of the testosterone that mens' bodies make. When you look at all the guys (the non-juicing ones) pushing heavy weight and training as hard as they can, are there many (or any) who'd be classified as "too bulky"? A woman can and should train hard - "like a man", but her muscle gains will be much slower and smaller than a man's because of her lower testosterone levels. As long as she stays away from steroids, she'll never have to worry about getting "too bulky".
