If he won't I would get w/ Biggt
You misread - for some reason he thinks madcow is the only person who can answer a general question about the orgs from which he (the OP) should get a certification. And people wonder why madcow doesn't accept PMs...

no, but he is extremely knowledgable and has answered some questions for me in the past. sorry i hurt your feelings and didnt ask you. and if you read the question it asks if anyone, not just madcow, knows the answer. thanks for your contribution to the thread though

Certifications don't mean shit. I don't think my coach has a high school diploma but I trust him with everything.

I'm pretty sure the CSCS is the gold standard. Alphabet soup after your name will convince people you know something so you can take idiot's money if you go get a bunch of retarded certificates.

NSCA - National Strength and Conditioning Association

They offer the CSCS which is pretty much the go to thing but also a NSCA - Certified Personal Trainer certification (I don't know anything about this but the NSCA is legit).

Some of this is time to return on investment stuff too. Maybe get what you need to get started fast and then deal with other stuff down the road (i.e. some of this is major time investment and maybe to get up and running you can do what most personal trainers do which is a cereal box course to claim certification (get hired) and then continue developing yourself). I don't really know much about where most certifications that PTs use are coming from so I'm not the best person for this.

I will say, definitely avoid these guys: http://www.exercisecertification.com/. That's IART which is basically out to prove the science behind Mentzer HIT, they don't have any proof but everything anyone else says is vehemently rebutted (like periodization), even though I don't believe they can claim a single athlete in the top 100 of any weightclass, in strength sport, at any time over the last 40 years. End rant.

Ideally I'd probably go with CSCS and if you are really keen on this stuff certainly USA Weightlifting has a ton of coaching courses to get you competent and go from there. Here's a link http://www.msbn.tv/usavision/displayPage.aspx?id=341.
