Lower back RUINING squats

This is annoying. Did legs yesterday - arrived at the gym all pumped and confident of increasing my squat, got in the cage, warmed up nice and easy, slammed on my working weight (with which I go 4 reps 2 weeks ago on my last heavy legs day), and proceeded to squeeze out ONE crappy rep! Dropped the weight, again, only ONE rep. Dropped it again ... you see the pattern. Ended up getting 5 or 6 reps with a weight 10 kilops lighter than normal.

This is depressing.

Background stuff. I've been dieting 3 weeks, but last time I went on a diet, my lifts continued going up til at least 4 or 5 weeks before my comp.

Also, lifts went UP on split squats, hacks and leg press yesterday. It's my lower back messing things up. I did heavy deads last Wednesday, and heavy SLDL's last Saturday, but that's normal for me. Why the sudden effect?

What can I do do strengthen my lower back? And is there any point in trying to get much stronger on a pre-comp. diet?

I'm not doing GM's because I can't decide where to put them in, and am doing SLDL's. I do pull-throughs on heavy hams day. And glute/ham raises. My gym doesn't have a reverse hyper.

Any suggestions on getting this back stronger?

I think that lots of people get lower back pain from running...myself included.
