Losing your period

Has anyone dieted their bf down so far they lost their period??

I lost mine for almost 3 years. I have had mine now for 3 months in a row...just like normal.

Talk about screwing with my head...can you believe getting my period made me feel fat??

Has this happened to anyone else? Also, I heard that your body cannot absorb any calcium while you have no period. Is this true?

My gyno was seriously worried my bone mass.

Thanks.

The period is related to energy intake, not % bodyfat per se. Bone density is a function of estrogen, in both men and women as well as calcium, Vit D, and other co-factors, and mechanical loading (weight training). Eating disorders are one of the primary causes of menstrual dysfunction, even in women that are "fat".

If your OB is worried about bone density, have her/him order a whole body DEXA.

"I heard that your body cannot absorb any calcium while you have no period"

I hear many things as well. As Reagan once said, "trust, but verify". That applies to everything, not just the Soviets.

If it doesn't come from a peer-reviewed medical journal, and has been replicated by at least two other well-controlled studies with large sample sizes, then be careful what you believe.

I too haven't had my period for about a year now. I eat fairly clean, but am not obsessive, anorexic or any kind of cardio queen (and I'm not currently on any type of cycle).

I really like the fact that I don't have to worry about it month to month, but never really thought about the ill consequences this might have on my body until now.

I'm lean, but not as lean as I used to be, so I'm surprised my period hasn't kicked back in yet.

Should I really be worried about this, or just enjoy the free pass while I can?

I'd say enjoy the ride for now, just make sure your GYN is aware of the situation. :)

An additional question concerning this --

I haven't bothered timing it to see if it happens monthly but it's definitely cyclical. I, too, have lost my period, but I seem to still go through bitchy phases where I constantly think about sweets (obsessively, really) and retain water despite upping my water intake and trying some dandelion. So I'm wondering, is this my body trying to go through the cycle, even though I'm not actually shedding the lining, or is it just an otherwise caused random bitch "give me some pie!" phase? :)

I guess what I'm trying to ask is can/should you legitimately be experiencing pre-menstrual or menstrual symptoms, even though the actual period never occurs? If not, maybe it's a psychosomatic thing. :)

I loved not getting my period. Tell your gyno as long as she knows so she can check you out from tme to time you should be ok.

It sucks cuz Im not used to it yet...

I went a few years without a period, but it was because of the OC I was on. I started menstruating again four months after stopping that OC; my GYN and I discussed the ramifications of not menstruating for so long, but because of my heavy weight training and age (33), she felt I was in no danger of bone loss.

The one problem I've had when at low bodyfat levels is irregularity; I just went 75 days without menstruating; previously it ranged between 35-42 days.

Oops, wrong thread....can't help here :p

Well I'm on Norplant and have no periods. I eat lots of cottage cheese though. I guess just make sure you get enough calcium.

I'm glad others have went thru the same experience...this makes me feel alot better about it. I guess I'll just enjoy this while I can!
