leg training twice a week with lower volume?

What do you think about a new strategy for me to train my legs twice a week instead of once a week but do lower volume.
My plan is to alternate squats and deadlifts back and forth. Then add in lunges and leg extensions on my day 2 split.
So it would be monday and thursday for example.
Is this a good strategy? I’m looking to build better conditioning to my legs
 
if you go overboard you can end up with hip and knee issues
 
it's important to do some cardio as well on leg day to warm them up
 
I would hit the legs hard and heavy once a week that's the way I've always done it
 
try it for about a month and see what kind of changes you see
