Killer pain in shins...what to do?

lately ive been having the worst pains in my shins while running... it was so bad this morning i couldnt finish my cardio. ive stretched but nothing seems to help. the pain is soooo bad its driving me crazy. ive had shin splints before...playing basketball, softball, and running track in school but it was never this bad.. i just iced my legs after my games and meets and i was ok. do any of u get this and if so what the hell do u to get it to go away. i will obviously have to start doing some non impact cardio....like the stairmaster or something but i luv running. any words of wisdom here!?!?

if it makes you feel any better I got the same thing today!

I could only run for like 10 minutes and walked the rest of my time. When this happens to me, it usually takes a little while for it to go away, but it usually does.

Don't know why I get this sometimes, but I just wait it out and do some low impact. I used to get heal planters too! ouchie!

You answered your own question KB. Might check your shoes, but it may be time to find another form of cardio. When I used to run, I had the same problem. Hated running anyhow and it always ruined by leg workouts, but I thought like everyone else that it would keep me lean. Then I learned.

Here's some info on shin splints. They suck. I get them just running across the parking lot in non-padded shoes. Of course years of running track in the halls of my jr. high / high school in the winter never helped either. Managed to be crippled every year by the time track season started.

I can run on a tread mill, though I don't generally include running in my training due to its catabolic nature and its just damn hard on the ol' wheels. But I've also gotten shin splints occassionally from walking on the treadmil at a steep incline, but I keep a fairly high pace.

I've known plenty of aerobics teachers (a la Jane Fonda) who were doing cortisone shots to deal with it.

KB - Ive been there...it sux so bad!!! usually it was my shoes.....you probly need to give them a while to heal then get a new pair and try running on the tread only, the pavement is much more brutal to the shins...start off slow to build them back up.....ask Agent shagwell about recommending some good shoes - shes the running queen...hope this helps!!

Personally I think running causes more problems than its worth!! So hard on your joints etc....I would change your cardio for a while...do the bike and some walking..just burn calories.. I would look into some new shoes too...

KB,
I got something like the pains you desribe.... too much uphill activity. I had also gotten lax on the pre- exercise toe-tap warm-up (shame on me!)

Tried various stretching, massaging it myself... no relief. The only thing that really worked was deep tissue massage form a physical therapist. He massaged me MUCH harder than I could have myself - it hurt!- but it worked. Took 3 sessions... never forgot the warm-up taps again... never get the pain anymore.

Hope this helps some :)

Girl, I've been there also. Mine were soo bad I couldn't do shit for legs or cardio. I was training for a show at the time, so it really hindered my workouts and cardio sessions. They finally went away, but it took a long time.

Ice them as much as you can. After the gym, put an ice pack ir some ice in a baggy and put on a long sock and stick the bag in the sock and elevate your feet. Take an Ibuprofin and call me int he morning. Ha ha
