JJ instuctor wont support tournaments?

My Ju Jitsu instuctor refuses to support hardley any local tournaments. Every time there is a tourny he gets mad if I say I want to enter it and says that hes not going to support it and he doesnt want his students supporting it either. He got pissed off at me tonight becuase I told another student about a tourny in May that is less than a mile from my home and the school. When I told him about it he didnt even know that there was going to be a tourny but told me the same thing and told me not to tell any one else about the tourny. He even said he is going to have it shut down before it happens? Whats up with that?

A LOT of ppl think tournaments are stupid . THe fact is is all they are is some OTHER guy making a buck off of you sparring with some dude you never met before . Unless youre getting payed I dont see any reason you should line some other guy's Pockets , personally .

I would have to agree on the financial angle as some of the entry fees for smaller tournaments are getting quite steep. That being said, tournament fighting can be good learning experiences and a way for you to build some confidence in what you have learned. Most instructors would be proud to have their students enter competitions and come back with some hardware for the gym.

My current school has 8 - 10 professional fighters from local shows, rumble on the rock, king of the cage, and UFC. Someone is almost always getting ready for a fight and my instructor will even corner them. We had a classmate victorous last weekend at UFC 59 and have 2 more fighting in the next 2 weeks around the country.

If your instructor is so anti-tourney I might look for another school that has a little more confidence in its fighters.

Yea I feel the same way as you do. But its not the school thats paying the entry, its me. and I feel that if I want to attend a tournament then thats my right and I will do so. If he doesnt like it I will take me and my 11 year old whom also trains there and move else where! Also what kills me is that this tournament thats coming up is offering $500.00 cash to the school whom takes home the team trophy. And we have allot of talent in our school so I think we could win the team award if he would just support it!

I do
if all you have is your school to spar with you will get stale no matter how good the guys you train with are
at a tournament you can see how good you are with people you arn't used to going against
besides if you are ever going to get paid you need that kind of environment (spectators, strange area your not used to, people you don't know accross the 'ring' from you) to get used to

how do you know you have a lot of talent
seeing as your instructor wont let that be tested?[/QUOTE

Well because we won team trophies in both the kids division and the Adult at the last 2 tournys that he did support. Although those where both tournys that was promoted Machado whom he gained his blackbelt from.

Did you ask him what his reasoning may be? It is possible he has a very real reason. If he does not take the time to answer such a question, then he is hiding something and may not be the class you are really looking for either way good reason or bad.

Step 1) Drive to another Respected School

Step 2) Pay the Mat Fee

Step 3) Train .

See you just got everything you would have gotten out of a Tournament and more , because not only will you get to Spar everyone in the room if youre lucky , theyll actually GIVE you their Points of View on what youre doing right and Wrong , and tell you THEIR ways of working around your Issues .

All for less than the price of an Entry Fee , to boot !
