Is walking good enough cardio for fat loss?

Yo broz,

I've got a problem in both my knees. I can't run or jump or even climb stairs without knee discomfort. I also dont have access to any swimming pool. As such all I can do is walk. Is walking still good enough to aid in fatloss? Will, say, walking an hour before breakfast and an hour after dinner (prior to bed time) be beneficial?

Thanks!

I personally think anything is going to work for you, rather then sitting around. :)

Look into speed walking. And then talking with your doctor will help you make a good choice.

Of course. Walking is actually a very powerful tool for losing extra body fat. I know from experience. I had bad knees from an injury and over time with walking and proper stretching they have gotten better and I noticed my weight go down significantly.

Google "Walk Like the Amish" a study was done on them a bit back involving pedometers and diet and what not. Several nice articles on how much they walk and their calorie rich diets. Note very few obese Amish or Mennonites not in the large communities of them near me anyway.

True about amish. They eat lots of potatoes and meat, and are all very thin. Good thoughts.

I understand from experience. I had awful knees from an wound and over time with strolling and correct extending they have gotten better and I observed my heaviness proceed down significantly.

If running is not possible for you than certainly walking is a great way to keep in shape. If you can do speed-walking then calorie burn can be comparable to jogging. Ultimately though, fat-loss is going to be highly dependent on your calorie intake and overall dieting. I am a distance runner but when I am eating crappy I don't look as tight as when I'm eating clean - no matter how many miles I run. Just get out there and walk, watch your calorie intake and your fat should come off steadily.

If you are not comfortable with your knee then walking is a good way to reduce weight. You can control your diet in this way you cal loose. Why are you not joining any gym? They can help you in a better way. You can work hard in gym to loose weight.
