I could potentially get a teaching job in Dade Co.

I've never stepped foot in Florida before. Just wondering if I would absolutely hate the place.

Plus, is it safe? Or am I going to end up shark bait?

Winters are very mild. Summers are hot and humid. Ocean is about 86 during the summer. Fishing is awesome. Lots of beautiful people, some have an almost alien beauty to them. Big Latin influence and culture. Lots of crime in the bad areas and lots of wealth in the nice areas.

The 3rd World is sometimes said to be run out of Miami, it has a lot of cultural diversity.

I would call it a fast, hard city. A slightly softened NYC with a far better climate.

Very well said

Doesn't sound so bad. I'm from the southside of Chicago, so it can't be much worse than that.

I figure I would be living in the middle class area with a teaching job. I just wanted to make sure if it was a moderately safe place or not. I assume most of the crime is ethnic and not geared towards whites?

If I was from Chicago, I would not worry about crime in Miami. Chicago is a harder, faster city in my opinion.

Miami attracts a lot more tourism than Chicago, perhaps 10 times more. It is a very interesting city.

Not really as like in Ft Lauderdale, the trade winds keep the humidity pushed out west further. In the summer it is never as hot in FTL or MIA as it is in Orlando, Tampa or even Atlanta.

The ocean is warm year around except Feb and March.

If Miami was a woman, her ass would need to be put to sleep. Andrew Cunning or whatever his name was killed the whole damn city when he shot Vercase. The reality of it is that it is harsh and you are either doing very well for yourself or you are poor. Middle class doesn't seem to exist. Whites and Blacks are the minority down there, even in combined numbers. You wont' be teaching, you will be babysitting.

I grew up in Miami (Coral Gables). If you're going to live anywhere in the area, go to Coral Gables, Coco Plum, Gables Estates or Gables by the Sea.

I wouldn't mind living in Michigan, but Dade Co. is so desperate for teachers, I can get certified there for just moving and teaching.

I was trying to teach in MS (where I currently live), but the beauracracy is ridiculous around here. I've had an almost impossible time trying to get certified. And I figure Miami at least has some nightlife to it. The Mississippi Delta does not.

Well, if I do go, I will probably be low-class instead of high class. That doesn't concern my much. If it isn't as bad as the southside, I think I can deal with it.

Dude, I used to keep a small boat in the Florida Keys. The outboard motor gave me problems one year and I had to walk around trying to find a mechanic to fix it.

A shirt will last for 1/2 block before sweat makes it unwearable. I ran out of shirts pretty quick and my fan base dropped off due to 'odur de shirte'.

Not as hot as Hotlanta or Orlanda? That isn't saying much. It is still hot, hot during the peak of summer. The sand will burn your feet on a hot day.

Get certified, get experienced and then you have options. Some people love Miami, it is ideal for a hard living single person who speaks Spanish.

Especially if you wear a thong well.

The cost of living is normal for a big city.

dude... move to ca.

California or Canada?

I wouldn't mind either. Unfortunately, the only job openings for high school english teacher that I found listed were in Inglewood. I lived in Southern L.A. for a few months...not my bag.

Now San Diego or San Francisco would be more my speed.

If I do go to Miami, I hope it isn't as hot as New Orleans. That place is unbearable in the summer.

I don't rock the thong. But I live pretty hard for someone of my I.Q.

I know why they need them so badly. I'm not worried about that part. Unless I get a job at a magnet school or a private school, I'm going to have to deal with heathen children, no doubt.

san fran is a soulless city... VERY unhappy people IMO. SD isn't bad for teaching, either is OC. I am close friends w/ super of oc school dist. Unf, have excercised that connection one too many times already.

NYC and San Fransisco are in a league of their own.

Far, far more reasonable.

Ok can you find a decent house for $400k or I'd be living in a lodge cabin ?

400k will buy a nice home by most peoples standards.

Take several vacations before moving lock, stock and barrel. You seem to have it pretty good in Canada.

Shoot, I consider moving to Canada as our survelliance state gets on my nerves.

But then, cops have an extremely bright future as long the conservatives rule our government. I think they want to incarcerate everybody who thinks independantly. :worried:

Dont you guys have very low income taxes in FL ? No sales tax ? That sounds nice to me. I pay around 35%, is it really lower over there ?

Lower taxes = lower services and massive, massive debt. If other countires quit loaning us money, we are out of business.

Our roads and public schools cannot compete with the need for a newer, faster 50 round per second machine gun. Our current government is very focused on improving the wealth and convenience of those in the top 2% income.

If you are very focused on achieving wealth, we still offer a lot of opportunities.

Just ignore the millions without health care, the growing illiterate, the staggering deficit, the potholes in the interstates, the growing waistlines.

Its a mecca for the right wing right now, theu would seem to have seized control of our government. Since they also control our vast spy network, their future looks bright indeed.

Wer currently employ over 60,000 to monitor your phone calls and internet. So you should feel....very safe.

Especially since we have no enemies. OK....thats a stretch.

Moving from Canada to Miami ?
Holy Hell, talk aboot yer seasonal weather and culture shocks.

Yea, it does stay a few degrees cooler on the coast and always a breeze compared to the middle of the state..
I know.

Are you restricted to Dade county for some reason ?
As I understand it, the entire state is begging for teachers for next year or sooner.
Many benefits/mortgage assistance and a small increase in pay(nothing like other states),
but class size and crowding is an issue.

Get a condo as you probably won't want to mow grass every week in the spring/summer/fall in 95F heat, unless you are into that..

Lots of spanish speakers and culture from Lauderdale south last I remember. Probably worse instead of better lately.
Anglo's are mostly segregated in high end housing areas for the most part, or they are white trash like AAP..

We do have sales tax on many purchases ranging by county/city from 6-7%
but no state income tax.

Housing costs used to be relatively low in areas outside the Metro cities compared to comparable Non Fla cities.
Lately with the growth being out of control, that seems to be changing and many young people can't get into affordable single family housing
under $300K. Even 2BR Condo's go for over $200K in some areas.

Awesome first time things you will freak on:::

Condensation on every window during the summer due to the humidity and A/C
Mildew is a constant battle unless you never open your windows.

HOLY HELLATIOUS Lightening storms every afternoon June-Sept.
OMG you will think the world is ending. It's not, very normal

Hurricanes... 24x7x365 coverage days before and days after.
People freaking out at the stores and losing power and A/C most importantly.

Bugs, Critters, Tourists and Gators all over...
Roaches, Mosquitoes, Love bugs on your car,

What is known about Andrew Cunanan is brief. He spent money lavishly on himself (owing Neiman Marcus $46,000 at his death) and dealt drugs including cocaine and methamphetamine. He also injected the male hormone testosterone which may have increased his homicidal rages.

nigga was nuts!

well good bro wherever u got...ive been to miami area when I played golf at the blue monster (dural golf resort)

best places to live are the OC in cali (brea, corona, H-beach or scottsdale, az)

i had a job there once as the tail gunner on a bread truck.

sure, if you're Cooban.

if you live in kendall, coral gables, the beach, or wealthy parts of homestead you'll be living in the "safest" parts of miami, dont live in hialeah, downtown and surrounding areas, cutler ridge, poor parts of homestead, and north dade county, but considering this is the 3rd worst place dealing with the economy, and 8th most dangerous area in the country, so in my opinion it sucks living here.

as for weather, our "spring" (early march thru mid may) is still dry until May with mostly warm, windy, yet more humid days in the mid 80s, and cool breezy nights in the low 60s and upper 50s with a couple of "cold" snaps in march and april . In summer (late may thru early october) it will be hot (high 80s low 90s night, low 70s upper 60s night) mainly when the sun is shining in the morning but from june-september by 2pm you'll see the sky change from this sunny beauty to a dark, erie sky with afternoon thunderstorms that will scare the sh** out of you at the peak without clearing until sunset and then a warm humid night (we get 11.4" of rain on avg in june) with a few late night showers. Our fall (mid october thru mid december) will seem like your avg fall in the north except of course for foliage and temps with clear skys, dier air, more wind, and "nicer" temps (low 80s day, 60s night) . with our first "cold" snap around mid-late october and cooler nights starting in november and staying in december. And finally our "winter" (late december thru late fabruary) comes with more sunshine (about the same as nyc) and mild or cool days in the 70s with mainly "cold" windy nights in the 50s with occasional cold snaps that alot will take seriously and a bit of a ridiculous approach (you'll see what i mean) with "frigid" mornings in the 30s and "cold" days in the low 60s and upper 50s.

so thats basically miami:faint:
