importance of mirrors in the gym?

Doktor Bollix said:
I think mirrors are bullshit too. If they are so helpful to form when why does so many people's form suck. They are 90% about vanity. I hate squatting in front of a mirror, I think it's actually bad for my form.

yes 90% of people have bad form, but that is because they abuse the mirror privilage, they think it is to check themselves out and see how "good" they look.

but for those of us with good from, that workout with mirrors i use them for just that, form correction.

They do help for certain exercies to insure proper form...but I just like looking at myself all pumped up :D. You also gotta know how you look when posing, especially if your ever gonna step on the stage.

I like the mirrors for watching my form. But I also admit to enjoying the self-admiration factor :D. It's very motivating! It's also good for general people-watching.

For your study, perhaps you could set up two identical exercise stations. One has a mirror, the other just a blank wall. Then sit back and watch which one people use more.

Mirrors and squats

I remember reading somewhere that mirrors can actually increase the chance of a newbie doing squats with incorrect form; as a newbie, I always used to look up at the ceiling, especially while pressing up, to make sure the back stayed as straight as possible. If you don't have good squat form down and stare at yourself or your legs in a mirror while squatting, you tend to lean forward too much, putting your back in a dangerous place.

So, mirrors for newbie squats = bad.

But say you're doing heavy barbell bicep curls. I like to stand looking parallel to a mirror, so I can look to the side and see exactly where my elbows are, and make sure I'm not swinging the weight too much. Or shoulder dbell presses, you really want the weights to go up in unison, I think, and mirrors help. Or bent over bbell rows, I'll look to a mirror on the side and make sure my back looks straight.

But, mirrors for arms/shoulders/back days = good.

Really, though, on all days, mirrors are a necessity for looking down the sports bras of sweaty fitness hotties when they're doing bent over dbell rows.

On all days, mirrors = stealth peeping aid:p

Mirrors: gotta have em.

Otherwise, what's the point of doing a killer arms workout if you can't check out your own double biceps pose?

I mean, seriously guys, are we working out beause its fun or because we want to see ourselves sporting huge guns?
