Fleming senior wears racist T-shirt to school

Incident triggered fight; no criminal charges filed. He has left the school.

http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/091505/met_19772830.shtml

Those are the words a former senior at Fleming Island High School remembers hearing as he walked from his fifth-period algebra class toward the gym. The 18-year-old, who is not being identified due to his family's concerns of safety, had just taken off his Dixie Outfitter T-shirt, exposing a highly offensive shirt.

"What about it?" replied the 18-year-old, skinny and white.

"Well, you know it's racial," said a black student, now in a group confronting the 18-year-old.

"Yeah. So?"

The undershirt the white student wore had a confederate flag on the front with the words "Keep it flying." On the back, a cartoon depicted a group of hooded Klansmen standing outside a church, waving to two others who had just pulled away in a car reading "Just married."

Two black men in nooses were being dragged behind.

Upset by the shirt, a 17-year-old black student hit the white student in the head. A crowd of about 100 students gathered to watch the Aug. 29 fight before authorities intervened.

The white student said he left the school following a three-day suspension. He said he was supposed to go back on a Friday but school officials called and asked his family to keep him home until the following week because "the school's in an uproar."

"Everybody was threatening to come jump me, so we were like, whatever," he said. "So I'm not going to deal with it over some stupid shirt."

Clay County school officials said the incident is isolated and both students involved were disciplined "quickly and appropriately," although they would not release specifics citing privacy concerns.

"There's no way you can prevent it when you've got students coming and bringing an attitude like that to school," said Ben Wortham, deputy superintendent.

Principal Sam Ward said Fleming Island High School's dress code prohibits such apparel, but faculty were unaware the student wore the shirt because it was covered.

"If this kid had this shirt on for very long, some teacher or administrator would have gotten him," Ward said. "... When you put this many people together, every once in a while you're gonna have somebody that does something immature and wrong."

Sgt. Darin Lee of the Clay County Sheriff's Office investigated the altercation and found no criminal action.

Lee said the white student didn't want to press charges against the 17-year-old who hit him. Offensive as it may have been, the former student's shirt is protected by free speech, Lee added.

The white student, who is now enrolled at a community college, said he got the shirt about a week before the incident for $10 at a flea market. He said he typically took off his shirt on the way to the gym, and on that day he didn't think about what he wore underneath.

He said he put the shirt on in the morning because he planned to wear it to a party that night with others who, like him, had enlisted in the Marines.

"I'm not racist or anything," he said. "It's just, some people I hate, some people I don't get along with. And black people just happen to be the ones because they think they're better than everyone else."

The student said his parents were shocked at his decision, Mom dismayed and Dad disappointed.

"I just can't believe you'd wear a shirt like that to school," he said was their reaction. "My mom was kind of upset about it. My dad was like, whatever, it's your life."

The 18-year-old said he has friends who are black, and he said he does not think they would be mad at him because they know he would not do what was depicted on the shirt.

Although a friend has borrowed the shirt, the man said it is "more than likely" he'll keep it in his own wardrobe.

"I'm a redneck," he said. "But no, I'm not racist."

When he goes back to school he`ll learn a new lesson in " Getting knocked the fuck out" hope he passes this class.

of course! "I laughed at a black guy on tv once, so i'm not racist".

I just have to laugh at shit like that. Sad part is, Mr. Crackerpants is how some black folks are going to see white folks for the rest of their lives.

that guy deserved to get beat down.. its a shame that the black student probably got suspended too.

LOL

The tried and true classic. Every person about to make a racist comment precludes it with I have lots of black friends or indian friends.

LOL, good old Jacksonville.

In other news, should be protected under 1st Amendment, no?

What's the difference between a public school and a public beach?

A ahirt's just a shirt, it never hurt anyone, but no one says anything when the black kid hit him. I guess if someone calls you a name, violence is OK?

btw, Jacksonville, very racist city.

This almost makes me want to do a vote on how many caucasion people have been called a racist remark by a none caucasion when it was unprovoked of course hmmmmmm.Something people may need to look at to this to see where the real racism is comeing from.KKK are a very small part of our society.

Yep, it's his consitutional right to be complete douchebag. His first amendment rights go out the window, when he is displaying what the federal government classifies as a hate crime.

Agree with that. Clothing in schools shouldn't condone hate crime. That shirt had murdered people hanging from a goddamn truck. That's just good parenting there.

my friend is a football coach there... i thought it was a nice high school... its brand new they just built the school like 2 years ago....

The school probably (I'm guessing) has a stated policy forbidding clothing with offensive illustrations, drug, alcohol, or tobacco slogans. I'd bet the beach doesn't. Plenty of cases all over about kids being sent home for offensive clothing.

Hate crime? for a t shirt? I thought a hate crime was clearly defined as "whites beating up blacks" but never "blacks beating up whites?"

Thought crime to follow next?

Anyway, yeah, that's Jax...where the old line has tried and tried to keep all the blacks on (1) the northside (2) the west side (3) jail. The northside has been rehabbed quite a bit though.

Nothing out here surprises me anymore.

offensive to whom? It clearly doesn't offend everyone.

Offensive to one guy? Some? 2/3? 1/2? 40%? 20% 50% of the surrounding 40 acres and a mule?

See where this is going?

It's like Bulworth said, "We all have to keep fucking each other until we're all the same color".

Seems to me we are trying to legislate a country where we all have to like each other.

I grew up in West Philly, 30 blocks west of UPENN. For a while I actually would answer to "cracker". When you get treated like that for such a long time it's hard not to hold on to some feelings whenever you come across a group that has wronged you. My kids will never know how I sometimes feel. After moving out of that area to one where people were educated and made a decent living, all walks of life, it's easy to see that it's more the area and dumb motherfuckers than it is a whole group.

Ya see, the back of the t-shirt depicted two black people being drug behind the back of a truck, driven by two hooded klansmen........

That there, is what we call a hate crime. According to the FBI, you can not think it, display it, or do it. As far as thought crime, I'm sure that's not to far away.

But instead of arguing semantics, I'd rather chalk this up to: we're all on the same page, the kid was in the wrong, got his ass whooped, which will either do one of two things; deter him from doing this again, or further drive the misplaced negative stereotypes he already had deeper into his psyche.

They had problems like this during my last year of HS. Everyone was wearing those dixie outfitter t-shirts. Not like that one, but just ones w/ conf. flags on them w/ camo. or little dogs..outdoors type stuff. I think the fucker should get his ass beat. But I don't agree on this whole double standard shit where black comedians are allowed to make fun of white people or depict them in ways they find funny, but whites can't do the same. I don't agree w/ that shit.

Lestat said:

they both deserve to be suspended.

the black studnet didnt get assault charges or anything, they were just suspended, who cares, fighting=suspension

i think the whitey shoulda gotten a bit more of a punishment though, for fighting, and for wearing shirts that go against school dress code

I am not sure this even makes sense.

Can't think it? In Amerika? Thought is monitored now? Where have I been? FBI? Since when did the FBI ever make a law?

Sounds like the USSR, where you could be denounced for Un-Communist actitivies. Yes, thought crime...and switch FBI to KGB.

Scary. At least it is to me. To the rest of our head in the sand population, of course it was wrong, a black person was upset.

We're doomed.

So at best there is a 50% chance of a positive outcome? Nice. good thing we have a mountain of discrimination laws, affirmative action, the NAACP and whatever idiot groups are out there today.

I'm not trying to break your balls here, but people are always going to hate each other. You can't change that. Short, tall white, black, ugly...whatever...hatred will always be there.

And when racism is emphasized as the wrongest of wrongs, it just perpetuates racism, because we're told how "equal" everyone is, and the world disproves this on a daily basis. Attempts to level the playing field inherently turn the givers against the takers when the takers fuck up.

it's all such bullshit. Anger and hatred always follow from that. This is 101 level psychology, and we keep getting it wrong.

The majority of Fleming Island would be considered upper-Middle class, all planned communities and such. But as you head closer to Middleburg along SR220, you have that Project really close to "Whitey's Fish Camp". Bound to be some race-baiting from both sides of the fence there.

If the school had a dress code that prohibits the t-shirt, the school should expel him. The black student had no right to commit violence and should be charged with assault.

Bor,

You're seriously misrepresenting the economics of F-I. Nothing in there sells for over $500K except for maybe a few houses along the water. Maybe.

half my staff lives there.

But I agree with the outcomes.

Isn't Fleming Island HS down by the Pace Island Communities? Along 220, I think they all go to OPHS or Middleburg.

Thought crime.....Toungue n' cheek.......got that.....good.

My 50% model.......also tongue n' cheek.

No one is trying to change a thing Matt, living below the Mason Dixon Line, you should know this. Action, reaction, done and done. Can't stop the hate..?? Punish the haters, vicious cycle of round and round political rhetoric.

As for breaking my balls, never.

True that is no Marsh Landing or Ponte Vedra, but its no Soutel or Lem Turner either.

sweet Lem Turner. Nice reference. I pass that place on the way to the airport.

I like PVB, but I work downtown, so just too damn far. And the average age in marsh landing = 100.

When i first moved here, I looked at houses in marsh landing. The realtor asked "where else are you looking"? So I told her that I also wanted to check out queens harbor.

The Marsh landing realtor made a face and said "Queens harbor?! Why would you even consider that? You'd be living near football players and god knows who they bring over".

It was her way of saying "I don't care how much money they think they have, you'll never see a black face in Marsh landing." She was right; very few Jags players could afford it. And these old white mofo's 'round here don't want to see an African American outside of a prison or a stadium.

I ended up in san marco, because I hate communities with associations and all that, so I am just in a regular neighborhood.

If rules had to approved by everyone we wouldn't have any at all, because there's somebody out there who just wants the right to kill somebody. What's your point?
As the great George Dubya Bush said some time ago, "There ought to be limits to freedom."

My point is that free speech and property rights (the right to keep what you earn) are the only rights that matter, and this idiot kid should be protected by both of those.

You have riverfront property in San Marco? You paid for that. Hell, you could just about walk to work, tho.

The courts have agreed time and time again that free speech has it's limits. You shouldn't be allowed to walk into a crowded hospital or restaurant and scream* "HE'S GOT A BOMB!" without at least gettin a good ass whuppin for your efforts.

*unless he really has one

That's why I bought it:

(1) 2 minute commute

(2) Not a planned community.

as for paying...yeah.....pay and pay and pay...I am renting one house on river road and building another.

I don't think it should, but it's hard to legislate common sense.
I think it would have been more appropriate if another white guy laid a beating on him, though.
