If you train in the morning should you eat first(if you are trying to burn fat too)

IMO, if you are working out first thing in the morning I wouldn't eat before training. Assuming that you are not carb deplted before working out you will have sufficient muscle glycogen to get you through an hour wourkout. Concentrate on post workout nutrition.

Personally I wouldn't want to weight train with the intent of gaining mass first thing without some carbs in my system, I run out of strength way too fast that way.

I completely agree with that. Just the thought of working out without eating is making me lightheaded.

You are going to want to eat some light carbs in the morning before you train even if trying to lose fat. Weight lifting relies on using muscle glycogen to fuel the muscle cells and if you have been starving your cells for the whole night, then you will need some carbs. I would try a mixture of half simple carbs and half complex carbs. If he does his cardio afterwards at approximately 65% of his maximum heart rate then he can burn all the fat he wants. After the workout I would consume 50-70g of simple carbs and 30-50g of protein.

Wise, yes I've heard you should eat a light carbohydrate meal, and not a lot of protein since protein will take longer to digest, if you eat a small light carbohydrate meal it should not make you sluggish and weigh you down.
