hows everybody maintain functional strength?

For people here who like to lift for looks and athletic ability, I'm curious of your gym routines/splits. I don't like to "only get good at lifting weights".

So for me, when I do rows, or benches, or pullups etc I. Put myself in a mindset of an outside gym situation like pushing a heavy object/person off of me for bench, and for pulls I really reach out far and use range of motion, kipping or using my whole body to pull myself like I'm hanging for my life from a cliff.

This breaks some general foundations of isolation and targeted form, but in real life if I'm doing pullups to take myself out of danger (or whatever) I wouldn't just focus my lats. So I guess, I really try and make each movement a compound movement no matter the exercise and I find its really helped me in sports etc.

A guy asked me at the gym why I was kind of putting my body into the lat pull down movement instead of isolating the lats and I told him I still feel my back being worked, but I'm imaging myself pulling my body up a cliff using explosive movement.

Then on non lifting days, I almost do caveman style training with boxing. I work the bag with combinations and punches, then pick up a heavy object and throw it, roll on the ground like I was pushed and do a burpee or something to get back up lol. It looks weird, but I feel I get a lot of functional strength this way and still get the V taper body builder look I want.

I think crossfit and similar things are overkill, but once in a while, engaging in a WoD hits the spot
