how necessary is protan?

That other stuff might give you a good base, but unless you use something that is designed to stand up to the bright lights of the stage, it's probably not going to be dark enough by itself. The lights will wash you out.

Nothing looks worse on stage than a bad tan job. Protan is great but a pain in the ass. You might also look at Olympic Tan. Dream Tan makes a mess and rubs off on everythign you touch and I personally think it makes me look like I just rolled in curry.

Some judges frown on dream tan. I use Pro Tan or go to a girl that airbrushes with Jan Tana. Both work well. One guy from my gym made the mistake of taking a shower and washing most of his tan off. It killed his placing due to the lack of color.

Olympic Tan is supposed to be good --- its a foam instead of a spray like Protan. Requires less time to apply, smells better, less mess, etc. I've heard really good things about it. I'm ordering some to check out before I get down to the wire. My next show is out of state so I won't have my airbrush guy there and would prefer an easier solution.

I guy at my last show used it, it was the first time I ever heard of it. The only bad thing was that it streaked. But the AC in the auditorium was not working, July in NJ, it was hot a hell in there. But the color did look good. You just would need to have someone you trust to help put it on you backstage.
