How much veggies do one need with meat?

I have been told many times about a saying, that you should eat as much veggies, as you eat your meat. That is - they should be 50% vegetables, and 50% meat. Why is that? Do I really need to many vegetables?

The more veggies you eat, the better, since they have a lot of vitamins, and more than anything natural fiber, which is very important for digestion. In fact, this is the ratio I follow when eating meat, and I always try to have at least just as much of the veggies as meat. Besides, according to some studies, eating vegetables with meat will reduce the risk of having cancer, so it is definitely a good idea to always include veggies in all your foods.

As a good rule:
1/3 of your plate should be full of vegetables (ideally dark green vegetables)
1/3 of your plate should be full of complex carbohydrates (sweet potato, brown rice, oatmeal etc.)
1/3 of your plate should be full of lean protein (skinless chicken, wild fish, eggs/egg whites, lean steak etc)

Vegetables are great low calorie, high volume foods that are full of fibre, vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. The more vegetables you consume, the better. Try to eat a wide variety of different coloured vegetables each day.

I don't think there is really a limit on veggies. I know when I eat a piece of meat I probably have a cup or 2 of veggies with it. Depends on the type of veggies too...I love broccoli so I might eat more of that than something like squash.
