I ususally use around 300-400 lbs. for seated calf raises for around 10-15 reps per set. Really keep my form strict and use slow reps focusing on the stretch & contraction.
:D:D

Ill be a monSTAR once I get up to 400-500 lbs.

u have to be talking about the standing machine. 400lbs on seated!!!!

if your talking about standing then i have done once(a long ass time ago) 4 45s on each side +the whole stack with no belt!! it was pretty easy back then...now...i can barly half the stack :(

they reason its so heavy is cause i weighed over 400lbs(still do) and if i walk on each calf with 400+ lbs...u can see the picture...and this was after like a year of squating heavy and stiff leg deadlifts. so my low back was could support it

Standing or sitting, that seems like way the hell too much for calves. I'll do maybe 155 tops on seated, little over 200 on the standing calf machine but that's it. But 8 plates on seated? 400lbs on a smith machine for standing? Come now.

no no. i said 8 plates + the stack only on standing.......if i weigh 400lbs and do each leg everytime i walk 400lbs ...wouldnt on both be around 800 as long as my back could take it? also my back was stronger for squat lockouts...with....i think it was 545 on lockout only. im not saying full squats. just lockouts. how much do u weigh?

standing calf raise....180 kilos...thats about 396 pounds...i swear!! you can put me on a lie detector of you want.:D

BC - I'm afraid I didn't understand one word of that. Except the last part - I'm 220.

ok your 220. take 1 step with your left leg. the right leg isnt working. so u just raised your body with 1 calf. now when u go and do standing calf raises. u say ok im gonna pick ohh say 200 pounds. 1 calf of yours can do that. it does it every step u make. so if your only using 200 pounds on the machine with both legs. then your not doing much of anything for your calfs. see where im going with this? now if u know each calf can take your weight, try to get up to atleast double your weigh on the machine.

so u weigh 220. try 440...u should be able to handle it. unless your back or abs can carry that much weight.

now do u understand?

i think it was something reg park use to do. im not sure who it was but i know it was an old time BB.

That's impressive if that's how much you are doing for standing Oak, I've got fairly large calves and am only good for half the stack

OK Monstar enough of these stupid ass polls....

Is the next one:

****** HOW MUCH DO YOU WRIST CURL? **********

Or, perhaps ***** HOW MUCH DO YOU SIDE BEND? *****

*HOW MUCH CAN YOU TRICEP KICKBACK*

or

*HOW MUCH CAN YOUR UPPER PECS LIFT ON THEIR OWN*

Anyway, i can't resist answering...
I do calf raises on the sled, it's basically body weight. I add 200 pounds to it, and do one leg at time. My calves are small, but they're strong.

hey big calvin, I understand exactly what ya meanwith that story of yours. btw, you weigh 400 pounds? thats ALOT.

hey belial: lol about the upper pecs!!:FRlol:

yep, 425 to be exact. but ill get down there. hey i may not have the cuts YET but i have the strength :)

Nah I was talkin about strictly SEATED calf raises... with freeweight plates. I can definitley handle that much weight on seated I am not joking. Somehow my calves are strong as shit but not that big. Like 17.75-18".. theyre prolly my strongest bodypart.

I like these polls bro it gives an idea of what everyone else's strength is like compared to yours.
:D:D

For me it honestly depends on the machine. I prefer using a leg press machine to do my calves since it supports my entire back not just the lower back. With just a seated calf press (the machine i dont like) i am pumping 550 lbs easy but it hurts my lower back since all the weight is concentrated there. But on the leg press machine where i can focus the bulk of the weight onto the rest of my back and shoulders i am just grazing 1000 (22x45 lbs plates plus a small bit of body weight). I have enormous calves do to my job in the navy, running up and down 60degree ladderwells. I only weigh in at 185. I can put up the 1000 around 12 times full ankle rotation, after that it begins to get hard to get the full extension. it might help to say that i used to weigh 200 so that extra wieght both hurt and helped me develop my calves. Currently i have laid off calves and legs to preportionalize my body a bit more. But if anyone needs help conditioning their calves. I suggest for bulk. High weight 8 sets of 5 reps with around 2-2.5 ur body weight. When u do your calf raises change the angle of ur ankle in relationship to eachother. 4 sets straight toe, 2 sets pigeon toed and 2 sets with ur feet at a 45 degree angle....Once u finish this Go through it agian drop 20% of ur weight and goto failure on all three positions.
For toning, ur muslces use weight equal to ur body weight, 5 sets of each position 12 times for a total of 180 reps. then drop half the weight and do it all over agian, Finally finish with a goto failure on each position.
This worked for me and now i have a very nice groove going right up the middle of my calves.

Last time I was "on" after training calves 2x a week for about 4 weeks I could do seated raises around 150 for 6-7 good reps.

I hate the standing calf raise machine. My favorite is calf raises on stairs. Both legs at the same time with a heavy db on the shoulder. Focus on deep stretch and an explosive contraction for sets of 10-15 reps.

I'm getting to the point where I think certain muscles on different people don't need as much weight because they respond better than other parts. That was the first time I seriously made an effort to train calves and I was using a 90lbs db on stair raises with both feet at once and had better calves than most guys in the gym.

Imo it's genetics and finding what works for you. For me weight is less important than a killer contraction and higher reps and sets on calf raises which is the exact opposite for alot of my other bodyparts.

im gifted on my calves. do not train them just occasionally and they r the size of my biceps - 45cm lol :))

Sent from my GT-I9300 using EliteFitness

I have big calves naturally. I use 4 plates for nice slow sets of 12 easily. Actually I have big legs and don't train them too heavy. I have kids and train for life - not contest bodybuilding - and don't want to be hobbling around. I want to play with them!

What the hell good is looking good if you can't LIVE?

The question needs to be more specific..... As in which type of machine? There are multiple different types of calve machines... On a free weight calve machine i can do 350lbs with bad form but still move it really good because im hot and powerful.. on standing i have done over 500lbs with bad form,,, 400 with good form and good range of motion... then there are some calve machines that use leverage that im sure i can get 600lbs on ... It just all depends on the type of machine..... and where the pulley, leverage point is... ...

i dont like seated calves i like standing calves on smith machine ...
the exercise work for me was training them insane
i put like 5 kg plate both side and do 3 set 60 reps .... max rest between reps in 10 sec...not more than that ..
its make my calves good ..heavy weight dosnt workk for me on calves
