There are three distinct phases- recovery, compensation and supercompensation. Recovery is when your body attempts to overcome the exhaustive effects of your workout and replenish it's resources. Compensation is when the body repairs the muscle damage you have done and restores the muscle to it's pre-workout state. Supercompensation is when your body adds additional muscle to protect itself from future assaults. This all requires time, but the amount of tiem can vary depending on a myriad of factors. I've grown from workouts in as fast as 24 hours and as long as 2 weeks, and all too often never.....lol
