how dangerous is ephedrine

New member
i have been taking an ephedrine product for some time know and was just woundering if this will cause any dangerous long term side effects.

You usually do research and ask these types of questions before you put something into your body. (<-- reference for future supplementation, ect.)

Not sure... you'll most likely desensatize yourself in one way or another as is the case with most stimulants of long term use.

to much of anything can be bad. Most of the problems from ephedra have been cause from other problems. LIke not working out and then just takeing it making you hear go faster than it has in about 5 years or more kinda like not working out for a long time and then just going and running 5 miles with out building up.

I say take some time off

If you have pre-existing health or cardiac conditions you may want to limit or avoid ephedrine. Here's one study:

Researchers at Harvard and Columbia Find Ephedra Safe and Effective in Combating Excess Weight

Study Published in The International Journal of Obesity Also Reveals Significant Weight Loss in Subjects

A study conducted by researchers at Harvard and Columbia Universities and published in two respected medical journals has concluded that Ephedra dietary supplements are safe and effective for the use of losing weight and promoting increased health. This is another victory for the effective yet sometimes controversial herb, which is a prime component of WIN's popular BIOLEAN® dietary supplement.

The study was published in abstract form in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology's FASEB Journal and as a full study in The International Journal of Obesity.

In this study, the Harvard/Columbia researchers found that herbal Ephedra, when combined with caffeine, lowered body weight, fat and body mass index. This news comes on the heels of a comprehensive science-based risk analysis performed by Cantox Health Sciences International, in which researchers found that Ephedra was both safe and beneficial for weight loss at the 90 mg per day dosage.

In August 2000, a seven-member panel of experts completed a multi-disciplinary review of Ephedra, also known as Ma Huang, and concluded that there is no association between serious adverse events and Ephedra when consumed as directed. Conservative estimates indicate that over three billion servings of Ephedra products are consumed each year.

If you don't have a pre-existing medical condition and follow dosing guidelines then it's as safe if not safer than most OTC meds.

If you examine some of the highly publicized cases by the media to scare the public about ephedra they fall apart. One teenager who died on the football practice field had the equivelant of thirty 25MG ephedrine HCL tablets in his system. The baseball player who died of heat exhaustion was overweight, out of shape and being exercised heavily in a high temperature humid environment. The media claimed ephedra was the contributing factor, he also had high amounts of caffeine in his system which is a CNS stimulant and diuretic. Why was it not reported as the "contributing factor." Why was blame shifted from the athletic trainers? Many point to baseball athletic trainers as the worst in professional sports. Acetaminophen(Tylenol) is the number one cause of accidental liver failure in the US as reported in a JAMA article. If you compare adverse reaction and deaths per dosage unit manufactured, Acetaminophen wins hands down as the more dangerous drug. Admittedly, ephedra is a "dirty compound" as it contains numerous stimulant alkaloids whic is why I stick to Ephedrine HCL.

This crap always gets isolated, taken out of context & then blown out of proportion.

I've been using probably every brand of ECA that's been on the market since the early 90s, including building my own stack. Some work for me, some make me feel like shit. For the ones that work, its definitely worth cycling it because your receptors really like to be cleared, tolerance drops.

I take Yellow Swarm, 25mg pill and it does the job for me. I couldn't imagine taking two of them because I rarley get to run fast enough for 25mg, and when we don't run fast enough I look like an idiot running in place.

Just drink water, and never drink a lot of pop with it.

I sure hope the government saves us from killing ourselves with ephedra.

Seriously, I have takin it for years. It is a good energy booster before lifting and for dieting but the old body gets use to it like everything and it needs to be cycled.

When starting ephedrine, be sure to start off by assessing your tolerance to it. Start by taking only 25mg on day 1. I'm not sure if you plan on stacking it w/caffeine or not or what your reason for taking it is. It definitely helps w/appetite supression. I've been on an EC stack for a month now. I take 25mg of Ephedrine HCl and 200 mg of Caffeine 3x/day. Before you ask, "no", I don't "feel" the effects anymore, but I know better than to increase the doasage. That's what gets everyone in trouble (i.e. dying) when they statrt upping their doses becasue they don't feel the effects anymore. If you plan on taking any other supplements w/ephedrine, be sure to do your research on it before you do.
