Using a couple of ingredients, you can make your own substitute for petroleum jelly, lip balm or skin soother. Products that contain petroleum are not a healthy skin application in my opinion.
BASIC SALVE RECIPE
Two tablespoons of grated beeswax added to two ounces of warmed oil is the basic recipe for salve. Blend the wax into the warm oil until completely melted. Pour your mixture into a small, shallow glass jar. As this cools it thickens. By mixing small amounts of salve, you can avoid the necessity of adding preservative ingredients to keep your salve from developing mold.
MAKE IT YOUR OWN
Use your favorite herbs to produce an infused oil to be used as an ingredient in your salve. I like to use infused olive oil and coconut oil in combination. This reduces the amount of beeswax required for your salve as coconut oil solidifies (below 76ºF) as it cools to room temperature. Coconut oil also contributes anti-microbial properties to your blend.
Other ingredients can be added to your salve once you’ve blended your oil and beeswax.
* A capsule of vitamin E oil increases the beneficial properties of your salve for the skin. Pierce the capsule and squeeze the contents into your blended oil and beeswax.
* Another skin soother and preservative in raw honey; add ½ teaspoon.
* For fragrance add several drops of your favorite essential oil. Just be sure to carefully read labels as some essential oils are not intended for use in applications on the skin.**
* Around 7 drops of tea tree oil acts as a preservative. The strength of your tea tree oil is important. Be mindful that you don’t use too much as the more potent products can cause irritation.**
It isn’t more complicated than that. Discover the blends that please you most. Your salve in small recycled containers artfully decorated will make a unique gift. These salves are versatile and can be used as everything from a lip balm (with added flavorings) to a muscle relieving rub. I prefer to use herbal blends that are limited to 2 to 4 ingredients. I choose herbs with properties that complement each other.
KAY’S SKIN AND MUSCLE ACHE SALVE
Infuse olive oil (extra virgin) using the heat method and dried goldenrod flowers & leaves. Let oil heat in a double-boiler over simmering water for 3 to 4 hours or longer. Use approximately 2 cups of oil and 1 cup of herb. Remove the oil from the heat, strain it into a quart canning jar, discard the herbs, adding a cup of coconut oil to the jar, and stir until the coconut oil is melted and blended into the olive oil.
Return this blended oil to the double boiler with a cup of dried plantain and another cup of goldenrod, allowing it to continue to infuse for another 3 to 4 hours or longer.
Once more filter the herbs and discard. In each salve jar place ½ teaspoon of raw honey, squeeze the contents of 1 or 2 capsules of vitamin E oil and 2 tablespoons of beeswax. If your containers are larger than baby food jars, make sure the beeswax is a generous measure. Then add your infused oil, stir until the wax and other ingredients are well blended and melted. Should you have difficulty getting the wax to melt, place the lid tightly on the jar and set it into the still hot water in your double boiler, warming it gently.
When blended, set the jars aside to cool. This should set up to a nice salve texture. Plantain has styptic properties which mean it helps stop bleeding, eases inflammation, itching and pain. Strains, sore muscles, and sprains are eased by Goldenrod which also has antiseptic properties. I love the smooth texture of this salve and how nicely it penetrates the skin. The basic ingredients mean it could be safely used on a baby’s bottom, chapped lips, scrapes, rashes and blemishes. Apply it liberally and repeatedly to tired, sore muscles.
TROUBLESHOOTING
If you find your salve is too hard, it can be warmed and more oil added, mixed and cooled to re-set. Should it prove too soft, warm and add more beeswax. Once cooled, check the salve to see if it is satisfactory.
