High School Football: Then and Now

When I dropped my daughter off for Volleyball practice this morning I sat in the car and watched the football players making their way out to the field for two-a-days. Reminded me of my Glory Days back in the late seventies, but there are some changes:

Then / Now
Gray Sweat Shirt / Under Armour w/school logo
School-issued used cleats / Store-bought Reebok hi-tops
No facial hair / Goatees galore
Hair sticks out of helmet / Short hair
NFL ball caps / NFL-quality HS logo caps
Metal hooks on shoulder pads/ Velcro straps on shoulder pads
Team Trainers carrying / Team Trainers riding on golf carts w/gatorade
gatorade & equipment

One thing that hasn't changed, dorky band chumps in the parking lot rehearshing. :)

Hey, watch what you say about dorky band chumps

They just grow up to be dorky government bureaucrats.

Thanks for bringing up not so fond memories of HS. Now I need another decade of therapy to cope.

By "Glory Days back in the late seventies" ...

making their way out to the field for two-a-days ?

or where you in the banned ?

j/k

I wish I had Direct TV or some other TV football pkg, because I guarantee
all I'll probably be able to see is likely the Tampon Bay Sucks or the Jacksonville Fags play here on the local network affiliates..

Y, give them some credit, I hear they can slap a mean one and scratch their way to the bottom of the pile. Get 'em mad enough, and they'll spit.

No, I was a skinny 160 lb kid wearing a smelley gray shirt and hand-me-down cleats who somehow made it onto the team as a strong safety.

We always referred to the band as "band chumps". It was a term of endearment. Some of the band chicks were hot.

our high school games were all televised on local cable tv, but that's because it was brand new at the time and you could've gotten a show about underarm farts on the air.

As one of the outcast school sports players (Soccer, Water Polo/Swim),
we were not considered "JOCKS" or COOL by the rest of the students.

We had no Pep rallys or hardly even had fans show up to our games/meets.
We typically made 1st in District or State in both but got little recognition.

But guess what ?.. We did not really care..
This Idiology has shaped who I am sorta and how I look at the world.
