I've gained 10 pounds, but I've dropped 2 pant sizes and gone up a size in tops. I used to have an emaciated upper body and a fat lower body. Now I have wide shoulders and narrow hips (and I'd always thought I was a "pear"!). Actually I wish I had more width at the hips to match my shoulders, but I can't change my bone structure. I'm doing lots of heavy squats to muscle up my glutes though. Muscle is magic ingredient that allows us to reshape our bodies.
GOT to show us that diet though! It's possible your wife is not eating enough. This is very common with women. Whether it's too much bad food, not enough good food, or whatever, all the training in the world will not make up for a poor diet.
