Help, my Girlfriend is losing hair!

My girlfriend has been losing her hair for a couple of years, she is 19. It seems to be getting thinner and thinner, She's not vegetarian and I think she gets more than enough protien in respect of her hair.

Have any of you ladies experienced the same thing? what can she do, are there any products for women like there are for hair loss in men?

There is a disease? that also does this, the result can be total baldness but I don't remember the name of it. She needs to see a doctor.
I shed alot but it never gets thinner

She hasent had a baby and is not on any meds/AS. She told me her hair was fairly thick before and the difference now makes it more obvious. I know its common for men to start losing some hair at around 20, but am I right in thinking this should'nt happen to females.
I've just rememeberd that her mom has very thin hair, she is about 46.

The national health service in the UK is crap I might be being a bit negative but if she goes to the doctor to see about getting a test, I'm not sure if the doctor will take it seriously, unless she only has a couple of strands left.

A friend of mine went totally bald in second grade.... it is a form of alopecia but is not androgen related.....

Reminds me of something in the news a while back, with Princess Caroline of Monaco.....she had a hair loss problem. Definetly needs to get to the doctor.

Definitely should see a doctor to rule out any of the serious disease processes such as a thyroid disease, polycystic ovaries, or an autoimmune disease such as lupus. Less serious causes of hair loss could be a fungal infection of the scalp. A nutritional deficiency such as a lack of essential fatty acids, biotin or zinc can cause hair loss. When the body is under unusual stress one can temporarily loss their hair. This can result from high fever, childbirth, chronic illness, major surgery, severe emotional disorders, crash diets, and some drugs. Hair loss of this nature happens 2-3 months after the physical or mental stress. The disease of baldness that people are refering to is alopecia areata, which results in round or oval patches of hair loss. The eyelashes and eyebrows can also be affected.
One thing is for sure it is not normal for a 19 yr old to have her hair fall out to the point that it is looking thin or having blad patches. Some blood tests are definitely in order.
