Got my ass kicked...TWICE

So long story short I had a BBQ party I ended up boxing 2 different people. The first person I boxed had about 30 pounds on me and about 4 inches. The second person had about 70 pounds but the same height. It seems my problem is that when I get hit I back up I dont keep going at it. And it seems like I close my eyes. Are these known problems?

"flinching" or closing your eyes when you get hit is a common problem that all beginners suffer from....everyone gets nervous and afraid at the begining, you will soon get over it

when you get hit, there are only two options: back the fuck up or hit him back...some people get scared, others, like me, get angry and smile and look for the knockout....you will soon move from the first option to the second...

stick with it, keep your eyes open, your hands up, your chin down and move in circles, never forward it's too predictable

Thanks for that I'll definitely try. That was my second and third time boxing EVER last night. I got hit so hard I spun around and was dizzy. Im glad to know its a common problem though. Next time I'll try to be more aggressive.

boxing as in with gloves we'll presume..

headgear?? probably not..

Training and conditioning including taking a hit, or becoming accustomed to the impact can be done through familiarization... the head gear will give you confidence, training and learning will give you the skill..

I don't box... if you hit me in the face i won't stop even if you go down.. it's a way of life and conditioning..

If you want to box you need a gym that teaches the skills needed for that.. If you want striking skills, same answer..

Well also you know what they say. Practice makes perfect. Yeah I had no headgear with only gloves. I can definitely take a hit.

stop feeling sorry for yourself...have some self-respect AND self-restraint next time and never judge a book by its cover...

hahaha your ex's bf, that fuckin sucks. It really does. Dont let someone like me bring you down though, im an asshole

I have never been in a fight since middle school. i dont know much about fighting i would like to learn though. i say u get better at fighting, then talk shit to that guy till he wants to fight and u knock him out. thats the only way u will get over something like that

It wasnt anything bad though. It was boxing all good fun. But yeah I am moving to utah when I come back to CA I'll settle the score.

keep your hands up protect your chin, as for your closing your eye problem, its common. sparring will help get rid of that, also, stand still, get a buddy or someone to lightly keep hitting u with with his palm on your forehead, keep doing that repetivley and it helps a lot. and most importantly go train at an actual gym.

I have had quite a few muay thai fights and the flinching will go as you get more comfortable. It has nothing to do with being aggressive, overly aggressive fighters are generally inexperienced and are not comfortable in there. It will take time and a few fights to find the balance. Get a decent trainer with decent fighters around him and you will be on the right track.

Yeah backing up and closing your eyes are definitely a problem when fighting;)

Happens to a lot of beginners....You have 2 reactions when you get hit

1) fight back

or

2) retreat

it's tough to teach a guy who naturally retreats to stay in the pocket and throw strikes of his own.

Look man I have fought many street fights, kick boxed for five years and now train for mma and Many of us who have been there have at one point in time flinched. Fortunately I can say my temper has always encouraged me to continue forward for the kill. So although in my particular case and few others it has not hapened, doesnt mean it doesnt occur. But like the previous posts have stated, u will do fine n time just stay focused n dont lose ur cool. Keep ur composure n swing for the fences kid.

This ain't the movies...chances are, if he kicked your ass the first time, he'll kick your ass again, unless there was some type of specific reason you got beat up the first time.....IE...you were really drunk and couldn't focus or something like that.

I know its not the movies, its the internet!

nah youre right I was kinda kidding in my post, i dont like fighting tbh

Just remember also that theres no weight classes in real life........so even in MMA, you might kill fools at your 190 weight class, but I would bet my bottom dollar that the crapiest 250 pounder could take you down with some effort. So pick your battles.

that happened to me. I was around 180 and this guy was 240 wanted to beat my ass. because i fucked his girl before Ieven knew him! haha anyway I went to my nephews hs basketball game and the guy was outside there, he got in my face, didnt punch me but started goin at it. He didnt hit me in the face but i got out of everything he tried to do

I'd consider myself lucky if I were you, 240 on an untrained 180 can do some serious damage. But props for sure on squirming out of whatever he wanted to do to you

Not me, I do not give a squat what weight one is, you pick on me(which NEVER happens) you get your butt handed to you....

you see the main problem is,with most people they fight to stiff to tighten up,thats a first bad thing then u dont have no agility, second thing is no matter how good you are you will get hit so just have to block the pain out your head,3 thing is when your fighting there are no rules as to code of conduct,i dont fight for fun i use to fight to live

Maybe you should stop causing trouble and drinking all the time.

It doesn't matter how good of a fighter you are in someone choses to stab you in the stomach. It happens a lot faster than you might think and you usually don't have enough time to defend yourself.

My suggestion, get a girlfriend and start going to the movies or something.

These were organized fights with boxing gloves not street fights. He was in no danger of being stabbed.

But besides that I'd agree. I'm trained in jiu jitsu and muy thai and people always ask me what I'd do if they came at me.......

I always respond "I'd stab you in the gut." And thats the end of that.

Pretty commom with no fundamentals and condition training. Most people that have no striking training often flinch, look down while throwing punches, swing wild, bad timing, no endurance, and aren't use to getting hit usually fall apart badly when offense is brought back. Simply most people can't handle pressure and resistence toward them. One has to have the knowledge, be comfortable, and relaxed when violence comes your way. You have to accept when you engage in violence it will come your way too. Live by the gun, die by the gun.

best way to learn how to fight..this is what bruce lee said and he was the man..plus this happens in prison alot..fight..lol only to get better is to fight..im not saying go be an trouble maker, but you can have all the training in the world, and get in a fight and still be useless..it doesn't always matter about wieght..and another godlen rule..if you do trian train by this rule..you fight how you train..if you trian weak when you fight you will fight weak,if you train to stay alive and train to subdue and put down an enemy then thats how you will fight

That also doesnt mean that in your gym you need to be "that guy" whos knockin fools out and snappin arms. Theres a level at which you have to keep it in the gym, the tournaments are where you have to truly test yourself and think that if you dont kill the other guy he'll kill you. Then its up to him to tap out or pass out and it aint your problem.

First off it sounds like both of them were 2 weight classes above you. that would be like BJ Penn taking on Fedor... not a fair fight and yeah what everyone else said and...dude..headgear name 2 things on your body you want to make sure keep working..

Your brain and your balls you wear a cup and you wear head gear..I personally like a mouth piece because dentists are expensive

Its true man, they all expect me to say "well I'd flying armbar you" or "I'd pull some crazyshit judo throw on you"

but when I tell them I'd pull our my 10" bowie and land it in their neck, I get some pretty....interested looks.......

haha

I worry for you D=

Except, unless you are some sort of psycho (which it doesn't seem that you are), they don't really believe you. It just sounds funny.
It's like saying, "I'd fuck her so hard, she'd have trouble walking for a week". Guys don't really mean that, it's just fun to say while trying to illustrate a point.

Well they all know I have a plethora of knives. Would I ever use it on someone I know? No.

Would I ever use it if my life wasn't threatened? No.

But just the fact that theyve seen and I've threatened gives them some nice food for thought.

That's a load of crap. Getting your ass kicked does not make you proud of yourself. It is actually worse for your self esteem.

Yea for real man, I dont know how many times youve had your ass kicked, but lying on the ground limp and exhausted while someone pummels your face and people watch has no pride to it.

But on the other hand, some joe is picking a fight with you and won't back down, what are you gonna do?

People pick on you for some reason. I'm not saying it's right, but you need to stand up. It's like facing your fears you become better person because of it. The more you face people head on, they will know not to fuck with you, they know you won't take it. Everyone and I don't care who you are, has been beat by someone atleast once. There is always someone bigger and badder.

Yea but thats what I'm saying man. Sure everyone will stand up to a guy smaller than them picking on them, but a 320 lb world judo champion picks on you; now youre either a pussy if you dont stand up, or a bitch when you stand up and he beats your ass. Lesser of two humiliations I guess

LOL!!! Oh yea, that's pretty commom to come around. Even then, I feel you can do something about it. That's when you show up to his place with a fuckin' pipe and wait for him to step outside, then you level his ass. You don't have to take that shit. That fucker's looking to punk you. You either have to be a good talker to get out of it, you can do something about it, take the abuse, or you can run with your dick tuck between your ass. You choose. Hopefully in life situation's like this won't arise for you, but if it does, you need a plan to defend yourself.

Hey man I'm all for it. I'm not a proud guy to be honest with you. I dont care what other people think, and yea, when I stood up to a 320 lb judo champ I ended up on my back getting pummeled.

I didnt care, none of my buddies held it against me, nobody said anything about it. Call me what you want, but life lessons like that got me to the point where I just carry my wicked 12 inch bowie in my pants when I know I'm going somewhere dangerous.......and anywhere else I've got the 6 inch cold steel. Call me what you will, but it gets you out of any tight situation thus far.

Haha and thats funny that you mention that. My friends dad had a situation with a lineman in a bar like that where he went home and drilled out a bat, filled it with lead weights, and went back and busted some knees. It works my friend, it works.

every artist was once an amateur
That is good wisdom, right there.

To Eric: If it's not hurting you to the point of needing medical treatment, get back on that horse and keep going.
You will get better over time, as you get experience.

Fighting for real aint nothing like PS3, so give it real sweat mate. too good.

I'll tell you one thing though: though people are born with talent, nobody is born used to being hit in the face.

It doesn't seem like much but taking fists to the face is much harder to get used to than you think, In my opinion thats the biggest obstacle.

Yep.

It causes fear in most men. I still am not past it, but I don't mind sparring and getting tagged so much anymore.

Getting hit in the face sucks, especially if someone lands one square on the nose.

I'd rather takes 10 jabs to the face than one big roundhouose to the ribs. That shit will kill you, hahaha.

I wouldn't say that. I've sparred at 90 % with guys who have blackbelts in karate, national champs in taekwondo, champion kickboxers, and mma guys who have all kicked me hard to the body, it don't hurt anyless then a great solid punch from high level boxers. Infact, I've never been hit any harder. Woke up the next day, I couldn't even move, I was peeing blood, my ribs were broken, and had to be in the hospital. No other form of combat has been able to touch me enough or hurt me enough to make me withstand that. To this day, being hit to the body by a good puncher, scares the hell out of me.

Hah nothing like a beating to take you back to reality, most people that start training think they are better than they are, the good news is you will get better with time, I tried mma for a few months and damn how I got manhandled in wrestling by the bigger guys and even the smaller guys, Jujitsu was even worse. And I took a lot of punches to the face when I was younger(lets just say being skinny and never backing up is not a good combination), I could never feel them right away and I would not say I'm used to it but I did get beaten up and I'm not that scared of getting punched, I am of getting my teeth knocked out though.

"The hero and the coward both feel the same thing, but the hero projects his fear onto his opponent while the coward runs. 'Fear'. It's the same thing, but it's what you do with it that matters". Cus

I wouldn't say being more aggressive is the key, id say learning a little boxing might help but thats just my opinion. A little boxing goes a long way.
