good luck benchmonster

Yes, good luck and remember to post results! it keeps us on our toes.

Sorry to disapoint guys.

I did not have a good meet at all. I am not one to make excuses, and will be the first to admit when I am having a bad day, or am just not strong enough, but today I bombed with a weight that should have been a joke for me.

I opened at 505, to set a new Oklahoma 220 Men's APF bench record, but had the damnest problem you ever saw. The rack that we benched on was not adjustable, and was made for a much taller person than me. ( I am five seven and one half) And when I took my grip on the bar, I was completely locked out and could not take the bar out of the rack!!! The reason this was such a problem was, that the only way we could get the bar out of the rack to and to me, was by having all 3 spotters lift it out to me. This, it turned out was not a totally workable solution because to even get my grip on the bar with their help, I had to rotate my shoulder joints forward, completely losing my upper back tightness, and flattening completely out.

I ended up opening with 505, and almost had to do a flat backed, bodybuilder style bench. No arch, but worse than that, my shoulder blades were not together. Those here who have trained with me can tell you, and I am the first to admit. I am not brutally strong. I lift moderately impressive weights for my size and experience level, but that is not because I am some freak. It is because I have meticulous technique. Today, however, I had no choice in my technique, and would estimate that on top of losing the upper back tightness necessary for a big bench, that I added at least 3 or 4 inches to my bench stroke by laying flat backed as I was forced to do. Even with all this going on, I was still able to get the bar off my chest and came very close to locking out, but ran out of air, as it took freaking forever to fight the damned bar out of the too tall racks, and down to my suddenly 3 or 4 inches lower chest. IT SUCKED!!!

The rack was so tall, that even if it was 2 inches shorter, I still could not have taken the bar out of the rack. It was ridiculous. The bench in the warmup area was not adjustable either, but it was a lower bench, and I was able to take weights out of it pretty easily. I was smoking weights in warmups like they were a joke. Last warmup of 455 felt, and looked, like it was maybe 315 or so. I honestly felt very strong, and was very fast and explosive, even though I had already burned a ton of energy pulling on squat suits and wrapping knees, and so forth.

I was, and am very disapointed. Mostly because I did not really have a chance to see how my training has been going because of the issues with the bench. From the way the warmups went, I feel like my new training tweaks were very effective, but alas, it was just not to be today.

By the way, there was some incredibly impressive lifting that took place at the meet, just none that was done by me. DG21 Totalled Elite going 2050 at 308, and only 22 years old!!! AnimalMass benched over 400, Hannibal had an off day squatting, and had some bench issues, but pulled very well. Spatterson did quite well for herself, going 8 for 9, missing only her 3rd attempt bench. Project did very well, and our own Vulgar Display of Power set a new record in the Deadlift!!!

We got to see a Junior total Elite with DG21's 2050, and he easily could have gone over 2100, but for the fact that he had the same problem, but to a lesser degree cause he is bigger, as I did on the bench. We also got to see some fine lifting by many people who do not post here on Elite, including a strong 700 lb squat by a 220er, a 390 bench by a 181 Teen, I believe, a 300 lb bench by a 16 year old 148lber, and some amazing pulls as well.

I am sure someone will start a thread on the Tulsa meet, and every one can post exactly what happened today, but this is the best that my addled brain can come up with at the moment. I have to go drink some pain killer right now.

Well learning is usually the key to eventually lifting better, I've had a problem with short benches before, got stronger went to better meets. and Irishpower's 'therapy' does do wonders sometimes.lol

Ok...I had a terrible meet performance wise. And it was the best thing in the world that could have happened to me. I made just about every mistake in the book, and will learn from them all.

NONE OF THESE ARE EXCUSES...THESE ARE THE MISTAKES I MADE.

Mistake 1. Let my weight drop heading into the meet. Got kinda sick the week before and didn't eat. Weighed in at 257....when I had been 270 a couple weeks before.

Mistake 2. Getting no sleep the night before the meet. I could NOT get to sleep.

MIstake 3. Tried not to get too fired up too early, and came in FLAT. I was completely out of it. Don't think I got pissed all day...other than the blown shirt, and bombing out. However thats the wrong kinda pissed for me.

SQUAT:
Mistake 4. Made 500 on my first squat attempt..felt like nothing. But I knew I wasnt feeling too strong...decided to go to 600 for my second. Should have gone to 550

Mistake 5. 2nd attempt squat got my feet too far forward on the monolift...when I unracked it the bar was traveling backwards. When the judge gave the squat command I started down, and then just fell backwards.

Mistake 6. 3rd squat attempt (600 again). Still had trouble with my footing. Unracked got the squat command. Hit depth, came out of the whole and stalled about 4" from the bottom. This has never happened. Never missed a weight that I got out of the hole.

BENCH:
Mistake 7. Bench shirt felt tighter than ever before when I put it on, which it shouldnt have since my weight was down. Freaked out. I decided to open in a borrowed shirt that I have never used before. Threw me out of the groove, missed lift.

Mistake 8. Used the borrowed shirt AGAIN for my second attempt. Shirt blew out and crushed me and my confidence. Put on MY shirt for my third. Blasted it straight to within an inch of lockout...but was spent. Could have held it there forever, but it would not have locked out. If I wouldnt have second guessed myself I would have got my opener in on my first try.

So I BOMBED...but it was the best thing in the world for me. I learned more from that than I would have learned from the total I had planned.

I am more hungry now than I have ever been. I have already made the necessary adjustments to my training. And I will be 5-10lbs over the class limit (after I rehydrate) when I compete in Feb...either 275 or 308. I have seen an Elite total...and the kinda weight it takes to get there. I know that is what I want.

Squat: 500...600 (miss)...600(miss)
Bench: 420(miss) 3x
Dead: Passed first...500...550

Hi, my name is Hannibal and even though I officially bombed...I unofficially totaled 1050 @ 275 in my first full meet. About a year from now, at the IPA Nationals, I plan to total Elite in the 275's. Time to go to work...gotta add 900lbs to my total.

Thanks again to everyone that helped at the meet. And to my training partners for making me stronger.
