Glutamine a waste?

hey all, i was wondering if the glutamine that's in protein powders a waste? should i just buy the stuff separate?

Hey RB!!! How's it going bro? I'm sure you've said it before, but can you explain why glutamine is wasted during bulking?

SSJ- you want to take glutamine separately from protein shakes, unless you get glutamine peptides, then it's ok to mix them.

Glutamine is one of the most important non-essential amino acids to any serious athelete !

During strenous weight training Glutamine is one of the first amino acids used along with the BCAA's leucine, isoleucine, and valine. Glutamine helps with proper digestion, immune system functions and recovery. So you can see why gluatmine supplementation is vital no matter what type of training the athelete is involved in.

The free form of glutamine is easily digested by the portal blood system and the peptide bonded is more stable in liquids as it is mainly absorbed throught the GUT.
 
Hey wsup gymtime? Good to see ya on the boards again. Well here's my take on glutamine....

Fitnesfrk you're right in the sense that glutamine is one of the first aminos to go along w/ the BCAA's. I supplement w/ BCAA's whether bulking or cutting. All articles i've read concerning glutamine point to how little of it actually makes it to your muscles. The majority of it is lost in the stomach, that's where you'll get the "proper digestion from." A very very very small amount of glutamine will actually make it to your muscles. That's why i say it's a waste IMO, and considering it's so damn expensive as well.

If you're cutting glutamine can be readily used as energy, in this sense it can help preserve muscle. But not a big portion of the glutamine will go to the muscle and protect it, that's not how it works. It will be used as energy, and as an energy source, again i say it is quite expensive.

If you're bulking and eating the proper amounts of protein there is no need for supplementation w/ glutamine. For 1 you have an excess amount of protein in your system and if more glutamine is required it will take from the excess. And if you want to believe in the theory of glutamine competing w/ other aminos for absorption, glutamine would be a waste if you were bulking b/c of the excessive amount of protein in your system.
 
bizz...you are correct about the absorpton which is why high doses of glutamine is neccessary for it to really be beneficial....you really need to take between 30-60 grams a day
 
and that's where money can be an issue. Glutamine is not very cheap, i wish it was. If i had the money to supplement w/ that amount of glutamine i would.
 
What exactly does glutamine do for you? Of some of the other common supplements like protein powder or creatine, glutamine seems to be the most expensive. I can't seem to figure out how beneficial it is especially whether or not its worth the cost.
 
Any of you bro's check out Glutacene? It's glutamine with BCAA's. I haven't tried it yet but there's definitely an awful lot of hype associated with it. I can't take glutamine alone, it gives me stomach or intestinal problems. I wonder what the hell that's from. Anyone know?
 
Never heard of this... it's suppossed to aid in digestion not give you cramps. Did you take it alone or w/ something? And how often does this occur. I don't think it's the glutamine, i think it's something in your diet, or maybe dehydrated.
 
Glutamine Peptides are supposed to be the best form of Glutamine available......

I have tried L-Glutamine powder with ok results (its not a creatine-type supp that you would notice a huge diff any anyway) but will now try the Peptides instead... They are supposed to be MUCH better....

Peptides are 3 times more absorbable i think... still haven't noticed a difference. This is one of those supplements that you can take i guess for years and not notice anything really. When i finish this tub up i'm tossing it and getting more BCAA's at least i know for sure what this does.
 
What about supplementing with L-Glutamine before a 1-1h30 cardio session ?
 
definately go for the powder, it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

Anthrax... I wouldn't do cardio on an empty stomach ever again. I lost lots of muscle that way w/ or w/out glutamine. If i do cardio i'll make sure i have ate something about an hour before or i'll drink a shake before i do cardio. Something to help preserve muscle. Glutamine isn't the "solve all" supplement, you know there are other aminos in your system and your body will start pulling different aminos from your muscles, not just glutamine specifically.
 
A good MRP and Protein Supplement

Muscle Link's Muscle Meals

Fat 11 grams (good fats)
Carbs 12 grams (low glycemic)
Protein 40 (whey, micellar casein, egg)
Glutamine Peptides: 10 grams

Muscle Link's Profusion

Fat 2.5
Carbs 6
Protein 45 (whey, micellar casein, egg)
Glutamine Peptides: 10 grams

Don't take regular glutamine with protein supplements, that's a waste. They both fight each other for absorption. You don't encounter this problem with Glutamine Peptides. Almost all is absorbed.
 
Whats the best time to take l-glutamine? I got a bunch for relatively cheap (compared to glutamine peptides anyways). Should it just be taken seperately from the protein throughout the day?
 
Between Meals

I recommend taking between 10-20 grams of l-glutamine daily. Take two 5 or 10 gram servering. 1 serving right after your post workout meal, wait about 60 minutes after your meal. Then take right before bed time, about an hour after your last meal.
 
is there and if so....what is the difference between glutamine and l-glutamine? Also again...what is the best time to take this supplement? I was thinking of just throwing it with my post workout myoplex, but that was not recommended in this thread.

Glutamic Acid is 1/3 glutamine. I'm sure you've seen it on the ingredients of your whey shake. But like i said only 1/3 of it converts to glutamine.

I think all questions on glutamine have been answered on this thread... shit... it's hard to find a question not answered here on glutamine!

Glutamine Peptides is just another form of l-glutamine. Glutamine Peptides are 3 times more absorbable. But yes it's a type of glutamine.
