Getting Started...New member

Hello everyone, I am a new member on the list. I am interested in getting started on a new body. I have one problem-work full time (day), and also a full time student (night). I have no time to get to the gym, so I need to workout at home. I am starting out by walking for 1 hour in the early morning. I want to add in some weight training as well. Any suggestions as to what type of weights to buy, and what to do with them? I am 5'9" tall, weigh 155lbs, and I am pretty sure I have slightly high body fat. Any advice would be greatly appriciated.

Hi Lynda,

Welcome!

If you have a gym close to home, it would be great if you could try to join & get there a few times a week. But if you are set on working out at home, you DEFINITELY can gain strength & lean body mass at home.

If you could get a home gym, that would be great. If not, some free weights would be great: a barbell, 2 dumbells & free weights - plates & clips so you can adjust weight. You can just use anything to lay & sit on (coffe table, aerobics step if you have one). You might even be able to get used stuff cheap if you have a "Play it Again Sports" store or something in your area.
The other thing that would complete your home gym are dynabands! www.spriproducts.com (xertubes) These are fully adjustable - you can easily & instantly increase the resistance by grabbing them lower, wrap them around your hand, etc. They are also very versatile (& travel easily!)

With some adjustable free weights & exertubes, you won't really be limited. You can follow any strength training program. Keep reading the board for great programs & be sure you are eating clean! try www.fitday.com to keep & track, be sure you get enough protein & fat, etc.
1 hour of walking is great - but 3-4X per week max would suffice. Focus on that lifting & clean eating to get strong, firm, & lean!

Azia, can you help me out then?

...........I wouldn't be the best person to get you started! I'm still a beginner myself, been working out seriously for about 10 months. Sorry:(
I don't have that much experience to give out proper info for someone like yourself who needs beginners tips!
But I'm always free for anything else!

Welcome to the board! I admire your goals and think walking is a great start. As for how to get started all you need is a bench with some cheap plastic weights. Start out light do bench, curls, rows, some shoulder presses and squats. You don't need a squat rack, just pick a weight you can clean, and squat it as many times as you can 5 or 25 it's all good. I am 43 years old (male) at 25 I started this same program, with the same equipment and went from a very fat 235lbs. (38" waist) to a you could see my abs 150lbs (31" waist) it's been a way of life ever since. Good Luck!
